Install of Autodimming Rear-View mirror (Gentex)

First, I ordered a auto-dimming mirror (model GENK5A), and I will be installing it within the next 1-2 weeks. It requires +12V of power, only hot when the ignition is on.

Has anybody done this type of install already and found a suitable power source already near that location, or does it require running a wire and tapping into the fuse box by the drivers side? I ask this, as it was an option for 07 to add a OEM auto-dimming mirror, so I was hoping that Toyota would have the wiring pre-installed whether you ordered that option or not... but in my cursory search, I did not see any cables to that effect (after removing the overhead console, which is being upgraded with Homelink).

Hopefully you have a junk yard near you! I put in a Gentex mirror with a compass from a Chevy for $9 at a u-pick-u-pull salvage yard near me. Exactly the same thing as the Toyota one with the extra feature of the compass. Gentex makes mirrors for most OEM's, including Mercedes-Benz! I simply grounded it in the OCP area and found a switched power source for it. I used an add-a-fuse kit to wire into the 12v accessory outlet. Can't find it at the moment, but this is exactly what toyota pretty much tells you to do on the install instructions.
 
Did you ever install the mirror? I just received mine in the mail and am in the same boat. All of the other threads I searched explain the color of the accessory wire but do not have any pictures of the install. I believe the A9 connection is what people are using.
 
This is a mod I'm planning to do, so I've been looking into it. If you have an OEM sunroof, the power to the sunroof goes through the ignition switch, so you could pull power off the supply to the sunroof switch right there in the ceiling console where the sunroof switch and those two interior lights (which are constant hot) are. That way, you shouldn't have to run any wires all the way down below the dash to grab power.

This is the way I am thinking of wiring it once I get a compass mirror. Please post some pics when you are installing if you get a chance.

Driverside grab handle has to be removed and cover to pillar removed to run wire down to fuse box. If you bought the OEM mirror from delaer it should come with instructions or just download it from website.
 
I completed the install over the weekend and it was super easy. It only took 20 minutes to do. The longest part was taking off the pillar and disconnecting the negative on the battery. I didn't take any pictures though. A9 was kind of hard to get to so I used d5 like another member on here to tap for power in the kick panel fuse box. Works great!
 
I ordered mine from amazon and it only cost 67 dollars. The order was filled by brandsport and shipping was free and no tax. Pretty amazing deal. If you are interested I would jump on the deal because I believe brandsport is closing out that model (GENK2A) and has limited stock.
 
I have picked one up from the local junk yard and simply connected it to the reading light. Reading lights gets power with inginition, and no reason take a part to any trim other than the sunglass holder. :):)

That's interesting -- I have a 2009 SR5 and my reading lights are NOT tied to the ignition -- they are constant hot. But I figured I could pull power off the sunroof switch in the same console, which IS switched thru the ignition.

One question -- what did you use to cover the wire(s) going from the mirror up to the ceiling console so it looks tidy? Was there a piece that came with the rear view mirror that covers the wire where it has to travel that few inches across the windshield to the ceiling console?
 
Webby, I am sure you are correct. I just checked all the wires in the bundle behind the sunglassholder with a voltmeter and used the "ignition controlled" one. The mirror has a small plastic trim to hide the wires

Sounds you figured it out. However, for others that might want to do this in the future I made a detailed write up with pictures a few months ago. Sanddriller, if your reading lights are NOT tied to the ignition, you can use them. Easiest way to test is, try to turn your reading lights on when the key is off the ignition. I believe they stay on for a minute or two and turn itself off after that so it won't drain your battery. If that is the case, you can use the reading lights to power your mirror.

super old bump..

i found an OEM dimming/compass limited rearview mirror that i want to install on my sport..

problem is it doesnt have the 7 pin wire that comes with it...


Can I just order the Gentex 7 pin install kit for it?


I'm thinking yes.. any thoughts??
