Applying Lexus drive shaft TSB to V6 4runner to get rid of clunk

I guess I'm going to bump this old thread, too...

Is this "clunk" common on all 4th gens? I've never noticed anything on my truck, but I only have 70K on my '07 - or does mileage have nothing to do with it? I'm really not liking the sound of this issue, pun intended!

Brake hard from 30 until you completely stop. Then release the brake and you'll feel/hear a binding "clunk".

I'd say enjoy your truck and forget about it then. Why give a second thought to something you've never noticed and has no effect on durability?

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I plan to do exactly that, but the discussion caught my attention so I thought I would ask. I appreciate the feedback from both you!

It's not something that will damage your truck, just a nuisance. Don't worry about it too much.

I had the Lexus driveshaft installed by the dealer I bought it from. They fought me tooth and nail, and tried to tell me that their "Toyota Techs at our sister dealership" said that it doesn't actually fix the problem.

For the record, it does. Almost 20k miles with no clunk!

our 2003 V8 has had this since we bought it w/70k miles on it, but it slowly getting worse and worse over the years. no amount of lubing the driveshaft has ever made it any better. I saw the driveshaft is only $250, so I'm just gotta replace the damn thing!

Update:
I ordered the driveshaft, and I put it in this last weekend. Install took me about 2 hours , maybe less. I wasnt in a hurry.

The TSB replacment driveshaft was 100% identical to the original one in our 2003 V8 4WD. The clunk is gone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

V6 conversion to Lexus driveshaft

I recently bought the new version of the drive shaft (Toyota part # 37110-60A40) for my 2008 4runner SR5 V6 to eliminate the clunk when coming to a stop. From all of the forum posts on this subject it was supposed to be a direct replacement. Well I can tell you that it is NOT. The Lexus/Toyota part is 2.25" shorter than the original and when installed you have to slide it apart to make it fit. This allows a small bit of the splines show and therefore it is not inserted into the shaft seal. There is only about 1.5" of splined shaft actually inserted into the transmission side of the drive shaft in this position. This is a bad deal because the whole drive shaft could come apart if you were to go over a major bump where the suspension would drop. So, if anyone is considering doing this you need to think again. This drive shaft must be specific to the V8 4runner only. I am considering having the new drive shaft cut apart and a new tube welded in at a machine shop to make it fit as I can't return it. Don't believe everything you read!

This is straight from Toyota.

The V6 2WD Part # 371103D540
The V6 4WD Part # 371106A440
The V8 2WD Part# 371103D540
The V8 4WD Part# 371106A480

In regards to the Lexus shaft working in a V8 then yes, it will work as they are both 4WD and V8.

Can you post pictures for us? I am honestly surprised that its that much shorter, I didn't think they changed the mounting position of the transmission, nor were they that different in length.

Wouldn't the driveshaft have a different or more of a slip designed to it on the 4WD model? Just thinking out loud......

I took measurements of the original driveshaft from top of the splined shaft (separated from the yolk) to the u-joint lobe and it was 42" on the Lexus version it is 39.75". The yolks are exactly the same from what I could tell. Sorry, no pictures yet. Still just pissed off.....almost $300!
