Fuel Pump still running 6 hours after I killed the Motor?

2011 SR5 4wd

I was at the deer camp last night and my brother comes in and says my 4 runner has a humming sound by my back left/driver tire. So I go out and listen and sure enough, there is something running/buzzing loudly. It sounded right in the area of the fuel pump, i have no idea what else it could have been. So I started the engine and killed it, and the noise stopped and hasn't been back. But now i'm freaking paranoid that my 6 month old 4 runner has a fuel pump that won't shut off and it's going to drain my battery or burn the pump up (i don't know if it would or wouldn't).

Yeah, I could take it to the shop but they won't touch anything they can't replicate the problem on.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

*yes, i did a quick search and didn't see anything but for some older model 4runners.

It's in the manual and on here. Once the car has been turned off you need to press the gas pedal to the floor three times in 1-second intervals and then apply the parking break twice. This tells the car that it's actually off and sends a signal to the fuel pump to de-activate until your key is re-inserted into the car to start again.

Most people don't do this, though.

yeah, i looked for the fuse box location and 4wd operation.


the other 674 will have to wait. should i look under dum**** ways to kill your vehicle? not being a smart butt, but who in the hell would think of turning off your vehicle any other way besides with the dang key?

i think your having a little fun at my expense.

You have to remember this is a Japanese vehicle made in Japan where they park there cars for longer than overnight more frequently and thus the aforementioned technique disables all auxiliary electrical functions and saves battery life.
 
Is this a joke? I don't even own a 5th gen, but when I saw the response, I had to know. I went over to toyota and read the 5th gen manual. Nothing even close to this.

Hit the brakes, initiate the parking brake. Are you serious? There is NO way toyota would do that. No on in their right mind, busy with errands and kids, would do this.
When you turn the key and remove it.. that should be it. I get that some cars have the smart key system, so I will even give till the smart key leaves proximity.

But, there is 0 legitimate reason for a fuel pump to continue running for 6 hours. All it is doing is forcing gas around the system, shooting it back to the tank via the return line. That makes 0 sense to me.
 
im sure it was the evap system since most new evap system uses its own pump and will operate when the vehicle is off.

the quote bout press the gas pedal and what not is :lol: im gonna have to go see for myself. just too funny
 
It clearly states in the manual...

5 hours after shutting off the engine, you will hear a noise...etc...(pg 24)
 
Is the OP sure he didn't accidently buy the new Prius 4Runner? The overnight recharging phase does make a little humming noise.

This thread fails. Giving a bunch of stupid responses to someone asking a serious question for amusement is not what makes this forum a good place to be.

It doesn't run for 6 hours.. It comes on after 5 or 6 hours.. I think the point people are trying to make is that the manual states this noise is normal and to be expected. (though the pedal pump bit was a joke) I don't recall what part of the manual - but it's most definitely in there clear as day.

:banana: This thread gave me the most laughs in a while here! I'm sorry, you have to read your manual, then come here to ask questions, or yes, you will be the source of amusement for all. It is stated in the manual and it has many threads on this forum about it already. So, 2 good sources of information passed over, did you expect anything else? Actually usually people get snotty and make rude comments (I would never do that though :)), but I like this approach better. I think we need to have more fun like this for people who don't read the manual or search.
