Comparison of 265 70 17 to 285 70 17 with Pictures

I upgraded my tires last weekend from 265/70 BFG KO's to 285/70 BFG KO's. I was expecting a decent loss of power, but actually do not notice any loss of power or excessive downshifting on the highway using cruise control. These are mounted on Countersteer X's.

The 265/70's had about 15,000 miles on them and were in perfectly good condition. I got a non repairable flat on one of the 265/70s and instead of getting a new one (I have the road hazzard certificates from Discount Tire), the tire store agreed to apply that cost/credit to a new set of 4 285/70s. Since I was considering getting 4 - 285/70's before my flat, this was a no brainer.

Anyhow, for anyone considering the upgrade here are some comparison shots. I couldn't find any comparisons like this when I was considering the upgrade, so I took these pics for anyone considering...

Great pics...
I am going to have to read my tire warranty in the fine print for the road tire warranty that I also purchased at discount tires... I have 265 duratracs with 4k miles on them and been trying to figure out how to upgrade to 285's...

Was thinking of trying the Craigslist route but without a set of spare tires it makes them a pain to try to sell tires that are installed and get unmounted since I am keeping my trail rims...

With GF that is getting smart to what some of these parts cost... The line "baby it wasn't too much for the .............[insert part name here] just a couple bucks hun."

So after a few days of rain in Atlanta did the wider tires throw more road dirt onto the side of your Trail?
How about gas mileage since I assume the each larger tire weighs 6-10 lbs more?

32x10.5 is roughly a 265/70 tire?

and 33x11.2 is roughly a 285/70?

i'm trying to decide between the 2 (265 vs 285) .. i don't want to put 285's on with a 2.5" spacer lift n have to immediately pound panels and body mount chop.. or is that only when i turn hard that it'll rub?

Hi Did you have a lift before you put the 285?? I have 2016 TRD Pro and would like to find out if anyone had issues running those on stock trd pro..

I had to lift my 2015 T4R Trail Edition as soon as I put on the tires. I could barely turn the wheel without rubbing.

I was ready with all of the parts and tools to install an ICON Stage7 Tubular extended travel lift. Once all the parts came in I bought the tires and had them mounted on 17x8.5 rims. Luckily I had the time free to install the lift right away.

2018 TRD Pro 2" Toytec Pro spacer lift, haven't put 285's on yet but it looks pretty tight for the most part. Once the other two tires arrive I'll update you

got a used '16 sr5 with 285s on TRD wheels. slightest rub even with the mall crawler lift kit. my winch will make that worse.
 
I'm stock (ORP) and run toyo open country rt and 17x9 wheels, I rubbed on just the plastic stuff and only had to do the front liner mod and trim my factory miss flaps. Went wheeling couple weeks ago and had zero issues

Is your 4Runner lifted? If not are you experiencing any rubbing? I own a 2018 TRD Pro and am ready for a new set of tires 61k on original Nitto’s. Thanks for the pics and info!

This thread is almost ten years old. It's tough to say if or how much any tire is going to rub until you install them. A lot changes based on alignment, wheel offset, etc. If you are just keeping the stock Pro wheels, that will help.
 
Something to consider... the tire mounted is not as tall as it would be if it were compared to a 265 not mounted. the 285 is even taller unmounted.
