Who has changed the color of Front and Rear Valance

I want to buy new black front and rear valances or get them painted.

Has anyone done this or is everyone just doing Plasti Dip?

JG...what model do you have? I have an SR5 and have looked at plasti dip and wrapping that front valance, but have seen some mixed reviews on them. There is a great thread on here (need to dig it up) about how to drill and install a TRD Pro Valance on an SR5... it is involved and pricey, but seems to be a good option.... I'd like to just drive mine into the Stealership and have them do the legacy grill and valance....
 
I swapped my silver trail valances for black pro valances. It was super easy and the parts were roughly 320 bucks. The front you can do without removing your bumper, the rear needs the bumper removed. I had both done in approximately an hour.
 
I removed my silver Trail valances, sanded them with wet/dry sandpaper (wet) and sprayed them with matte black automotive paint (aerosol can from Lowes - "recommended for hood stripes" or something written on the can). Probably five or six coats. Cost me maybe $30 max. Slightly better than the $500+ for the real TRD Pro ones and looks good (might even say looks better since the OEM has more of a shiny sheen to it than the grille garnish - now my garnish is about the same sheen as my valances).

You decide if it's worth the cost:

I know you might dismiss plasti-dip as the cheap option, but it's so common for a reason. If you plan on scratching it up on the trails, plasti-dip is super easy to touch up. Also, if your coats are evenly applied, it can look almost as good as real paint. Here's a picture of mine right after I finished it.

It cost a bit more, but I got a black pro valance for the front and silver trail for the rear. I put a couple coats of black plastidip and then glosifier on the rear. Its not an exact match. but you never see them at the same time, so it works.

What I should have done is got both front and rear trail valances and sanded/ sprayed them with a $10 can of bed liner.

If you have an SR5, the outline for the valance mounting holes are on the inside for the front and rear bumper. super easy to pull, cut the holes, clip a valance in place and remount.
 
I had mine painted with the factory black paint. Was $211 all said and done. Looks awesome to have the flake in it.
 
I've always had a strong dislike for the silver trim pieces on 4Runners and any other vehicle that is so commonplace. I much prefer the color-matched look on any color. I had my pieces painted at a body shop nearby within a couple weeks of getting my 2017 last year. I was exploring the possibility of trading SR5 bumper covers with someone, but ended up going this route. The SR5 covers would be ideal for me as this valance piece sticks out more and will be prone to ripping off. We'll see how long they last.

I have the TRD Off Road Premium. The valances are silver which drives me nuts. After seeing these responses....
I think before ordering the Black Pro Valances I will remove mine and and paint them black.
Worst case if I’m not in love with it I’m not out much money. Best case, if it works I can use that money on Baja fog lights ������Thanks so much

If you go off road, you might want to try bed liner as it will hold up way better than paint. Either way, wet sand w/ 350 first.

I went back and forth on using paint or plasti dip vs. buying the TRD Pro valances. I ended up buying them because I wanted to ensure they looked great. After the fact I ended up learning what Brtnstrns called out - there is a slight finish difference between the matte TRD "Toyota" cross bar and the black on the valances, which has a slight sheen. If I had to do it all over again, I'd try the spray automotive paint route. If you don't like it, you're out $30 and some time. You can still buy new ones if you're not satisfied.

On a related note, if you buy them, realize that Toyota has markup on parts in addition to the labor. The local shop I went to charged me their cost on the parts and their hourly rate for labor.

This was my exact thought process. Figured I might as well give it a shot and worst case I'd just have them done professionally or buy the OEMs.

I won't shit on other people using plastidip, I've just got a weird mental block where I feel like plastidip just isn't the "proper" way of doing it on my own vehicle. Same reason I got my wheels powdercoated instead of dipped.
 
I ordered the black overlay lettering from Amazon. It was hella expensive for what they are (plastic letters that fit over the original letters). I believe it was like $100. That was about a year ago. It looks great if you can just get over the cost.

A latte a day not bought is about $1,000 by the end of the year. Ymmv

I went with purchase and self install over plastidip. I used plastidip on my badges and realized I don’t have as steady of a hand to make something as big as the valance look nice. I was also worried about scratches that might required touch up (wanted to avoid ongoing maintenance). Once I got to installation I started to regret it when I learned I needed to remove entire bumpers to do it easily. It worked out though but your heart stops seeing a brand new car with missing pieces.

Can't powdercoat plastic. And rattle-canning such a small surface area in matte black after proper surface prep is really not difficult to do, even for a total amateur. As long as the final coat is done slowly and with care making sure the passes are overlapped well, there would be no discernible difference (including durability/longevity) between your $30 job, a $200 job by a professional, or a $500 OEM part replacement.
