OK, I know there's a gazillion roof rack threads and this has all been said before, but today I saw it for myself. I have a Yakima Skybox pro that we use for road trips and it worked just fine on my 2006 $runner Sport with factory rack a crossbars. On my '06 I could throw the Skybox up there and load it with a 100+ pounds of vacation stuff and no problemo. The crossbars on my '06 showed no signs of flexing whatsoever.
OK fast forward to my beautiful brand new 2018 TRD pro. I put the skybox on the crossbars and they flex under the weight of the EMPTY Skybox so badly that the cleats on the skybox contact the roof of my rig! Did I mention that was with the empty Skybox? Standing on a ladder if I press some of my weight down into the floor of the box its even worse so I imagine loaded with water and chairs, such on bumpy roads my roof would be at least scratched up if not dented from the skybox, so that was a couple hundred extra bucks wasted.
So - I need to use my Skybox and I am not ready to completely replace the factory rack (budget and sheepish about unbolting those anchors points leaving the possibility leakage into the chassis) Suffice to say although a complete replacement is ideal, I won't be doing that yet.
That being the case, can anyone recommend a good set of aftermarket crossbar that affix to the OE side rails and are rigid to carry the weight of the skybox, low profile and aero as possible? First hand experience and picture would be much appreciated as I have some shopping to do.
