Your List of Must Do Easy Mods for 5th Gen

Hey all!

I will be getting an SR5 Premium in the next 6 weeks and am really excited. I have never really owned a car that I’ve picked out in my adult life and have pretty much just driven my vehicles bone stock.

This will pretty much be the first vehicle that I picked and am looking for some relatively modest upgrades that will make the 5th Gen look, drive, handle, etc as best it can.

I don’t have an endless barrel of money, so I’m looking for bang for the buck.

I’m relying on your expertise here! So what’s your list of must do modest mods for the 5th Gen 4runner?!

Kind of in the same boat as you but my first mod was lift and tires/wheels

In my very limited knowledge I've learned it all depends where you are and what you'll be doing

I think that's going to be my next mod while waiting on my skids.
 
Do upgrades as you enjoy your vehicle. 4runner stock is very capable and will impress you.

Once you start hitting harder trails, the mods are a lift, tires, sliders, and armor. Don't forget recovery gear, compressor, way to air down, etc.

Improving low beams is a hot topic. My lift removed my rake so I'm keeping my stock bulbs but I'm going to put some nice fog lights just in case.

Molle panels on back windows to store your recovery gear is nice too. But my favorite mod was using bungie cords on passanger seat handles and tabs in the trunk to hold my fishing poles next to my roof.

Upgrades for what purpose? Off road crawling, extended overland travel and camping, or just looking cool? Off road crawling needs lift with articulation, tires, recovery gear. Overlanding needs additional electric power management, food storage and cooking, and sleep setups.

Haha. Nah man. None of that. Like I said above, modest upgrades, “easy, must do mods”.

Great ideas from many people. Didn't see anyone mention a phone mount. ProClip has the best setup. It is a two part system: first part is custom designed for a specific vehicle, and the second part for specific phone models.
 
Not sure if it works on 2021 models. Be sure to check.

Carista app. 7day subscription. Change the settings to your liking.
 
Front door (driver/passenger) window tint. Match to stock which should be legal in most states. Less than $200 out the door.

Depending on what year you buy, upgrade lighting. Interior lights from Diode Dynamics. Change out the fog lights to Diode SS3.. provides much better visibility and yellow improves inclimate weather visibility. $180 for the Sport SS3 I believe, basically plug and play.

Floor mats. I purchased the Toyota OEM weather mats, good purchase.

Phone mount. Check out 67 Designs (constantly OOS) or trail4runner for RAM Mount install, super easy and less than $50.

Cargo area all-weather mat. I'm using a Husky Liner, I believe about $80. Highly recommend.
 
Must do? What drive train? What do you intend to do with it? Personally I wouldn't do a thing based on your comments so far except for maybe better tires right away as you can probably get a good trade in value on the stock tires. In Jan I purchased a new 2021 TRDOR and was able to get 5 new KO2’s for the price of 4. Have no intention of any other mods except for possibly a ceramic coat.

I like and did this.
 
I'm a big fan of Weathertech mats and run them in all of our daily drivers. Fit is spot on and they're nearly indestructible.

I'd also throw in my homelink mirror as one of my most used modifications. It's a little more effort, but I use it nearly every day.

They do. I'd get the Suma Performance mirrors or the CarTrimHome knockoffs though. They are convex and do a better job at showing your blindspots than the Rav4 spotter mirrors
 
Weathertech type floor mats for sure.

LED interior lights.

Add a better horn.

A bigger rear-view mirror.

Those are the basics, no matter what you use it for, and they are not expensive at all.

If you do go off-road, then get better tires.

If you do your own work, spacers can give you a safe, modest lift up front for $100.

I added skids after I dented the factory versions.

A roof rack was a game-changer for me as I camp. A very convenient place to pack a shovel, gas cans, even javelinas after a hunt. Also a place to stow stuff while I sleep in the back.

Wheels are one of the last things you really need to change, but it's a popular choice.

cheap mods....

Screen protector for 20+ infotainment screen...this is the one i used, fit perfectly, easy to apply, no air bubbles.

Diff breather relocation

Diode dynamics turn to tail reverse light mod. (makes a huge difference out on the trail)
2014-2021 Toyota 4Runner Tail as Turn™ Module +Backup Module (USDM)

some sort of Plano storage bin....cheap solution to store tools, jumper cables, recovery gear in.
