To fix or to sell, that is the question

I have an 05 4Runner w/ 97K miles. The catalytic converters just went bad (all 4 at once???). I have gotten 3 quotes of around 3600 to fix. Also, the back shocks which are tied into the hydrolic system need replaced at about 2K.Craigs list puts the value of the SUV at around 10K. So I am looking at around 5500 to fix. I have owned the car since 08 and have taken excellent care of it mechanically. The interior is great but the right side has some minor body scraping.
What are your opinions on spending 1/2 the value to fix???
Thanks!

Well, this is your very first post, here on T4R.org, so we do not know much about you, your rig, your technical skill level for DIY, or your level of enthusiasm toward said vehicle, which makes for offering you advice, damned difficult if not impossible. Most of us here on T4R.org love our vehicles, and therefore, will usually go about doing whatever we have to do to keep them on the road as it is a labor of love. The prices you quoted, I am assuming, are parts plus labor. Most of here, would do said labor ourselves. Your runner has not hit 100k miles yet, and therefore, is not even halfway through its life. Your shock "hydrolic (hydraulic) system" is actually called XREAS. Typical life span of XREAS is about 110k - 130k miles. Replacement of XREAS is not cost affective and thus most people here on T4R.org, simply replace with standard shocks and springs. This would cost you around $500.00 - $600.00 if you do it yourself. Not sure about the cost of the catalytic converters, but I am confident that it would be HALF of the dollar amount that you quoted, if you went aftermarket and did the labor yourself.

Anyway, assuming that you, and the previous owner of your Runner took good care of it, you have a vehicle that has at least another six to 10 years of life, if you are willing to care for it. And when put like that, even $5,500.00 in repairs doesn't sound that awful. Besides, a new Runner is going to cost you damned near $40k.

Yes to all of that. The suspension will be relatively cheap compared to a new XREAS system. As preacher said, you could easily do it for $500. $340 for 5100s and another $100 for FJ springs. The converters... a little too coincidental they all went at once. I'd get a second opinion, not on the price, on what's actually needed.

I agree with what preacher35 said. My first question is how do you know all 4 cats are bad? Is the check engine light on? I don't know anything about the XREAS system, but I've seen pictures of the parts on the ground from other T4R members that ripped it out. But again, what symptoms was your 4r displaying to indicate that the XREAS system was bad?

I just went through a similar decision with my 2008 LR3...and the answer for me was...I'm on this forum now :p

I'm automotively enthusiastic but mechanically inept. So I was looking at paying to have a bunch of maintenance work done (~$5,000 in the next six months). The truck was worth maybe $15,000 at retail. It had already been in the shop for repairs three times this year (costing $2,500).

The last straw for me was looking down the road and realizing that given the reliability and upkeep costs, I could soon be looking at financially "totalling" the car without a scratch on it.

That's not the case with the 4R. Its track record for reliability is far better. Even if it requires an expensive service, it's not as though you would expect it to fail shortly in another way. Generally, it's a car worth fixing because it will continue in yeoman service.

what everyone else said, fix it, but do not take it to the dealer. cats are easy, buy cats yourself and take them to an exhaust shop, same with suspension. you could fix you "$5500" bill for half that easily. i sold my first car for 3 grand when i should have just fixed it for the cost of the $50 part i needed, and then sold it for double.

I call BS on all the cats being bad, definitely need a 2nd opinion on that one. Hell, my 3rd gen is 6 years older than yours with almost 4 times the mileage and it still has the original cat on it.

Thanks!

First of all, thanks to all of you for the quick response. Ill give you back ground and we can start over! We have had 4 opinions on it. The last one spent 2 days with it running tests on the O2 sensors to be sure that the problem didn't lie there. At his expense. All 4 or them were skeptical about all 4 cats going out at once. (The check engine light is on) as well as the xmas tree surrounding the VRSC etc etc etc. We have not been to a dealer but have gone to independents that all came highly recommended. One , a family friend.
The car runs the same, shifts the same, and shows no signs of any problems other than the damn lights.
The price quotes are based on someone else doing the work and book calls for 14.5 hrs and re-positioning, if not removing the engine. They do pack that v-8 in there. The error codes that come up are 420 and 430 which are cats on both sides.
We have been told by two different folks that the aftermarket stuff can not be relied upon in this case. These guys say that they use aftermarket all the time but that Toyota cats, o2 sensors etc. are very picky.
This all started shortly after a alternator went out on the road and we drove it til it died. 2 days later the lights were upon us.
My wife posted the original post, this is her baby and she loves it. I actually had her looking at a Cayenne (used of course) and she still came back to trying to find a solution to the 4runner's problems ( and No, she can't spell Hydraulic).
My skill level is above average but do to the fact that we live in two places and the Toyota only stays here in NM it becomes a bit of problem to bite off a project of that magnitude being here part-time.
The shocks are another story. Thanks for the input and I agree whole-heartedly that they should be conventional.
Any other thoughts we would appreciate and are watching this site (she is, rather)
Thanks again

OK, regardless of what the 4 independent mechanics said, I'm still doubting that all 4 catalytic converters went out at the same time. This is probably something that maybe BlackWorksInc could comment on as he is a certified Toyota technician, but regardless, I would have a certified Toyota tech look at it. Example: I had an a/c issue going on about two years ago. I took it to three different, COMPETENT and trustworthy mechanics and they ALL misdiagnosed the problem! Then, I took it to a certified Toyota mechanic and he found the problem within FIVE MINUTES!

As far as whether or not you should keep and repair versus selling and moving on to a different vehicle, only you can answer that question. If I were in your shoes, I, of course would keep it. I love my Runner and enjoy working on and modifying it. If you are looking to save money, purchasing a Porsche Cayenne is NOT the way to go. Go price out an alternator swap for a Cayenne and it will make your current repair look like fast food. Just sayin'. Oh, one more thing: You mentioned that your Runner is the 4.7 V8. Have you changed out the timing belt and water pump yet? Your timing belt MUST be changed soon or you risk it breaking and damaging your valves.

I would give http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/132953-toolbox-how-use.html#post1272379 a look over to better understand how catalytic converters work.

I would assume that being a non-CA vehicle you are probably not running AFRs in the front which should make diagnostics a bit easier. I am assuming between 4 technicians that someone tried all new O2 sensors?

Edit-

Seems as those regardless of emissions level, that AFRs are used for B1S1 and B2S1 locations according to TIS.
