OK, so now I'm confused. I thought that simply pressing the button on the 4WD shifter would engage all four wheels but that you could continue to drive on dry pavement. Is that not the case?

All the fluids are fresh, within the last 10,000 miles or so including the differentials.

I've got two different part numbers for the front struts to go with '99 "tall" coils, 48510-39436 and 48510-39585. The 39436 is quite a bit more expensive than the 39585. In one document I looked at, it looks as though the 39436 is for 4WD vehicles. Can anyone confirm the correct part number...
