Didn't think this MPG was possible

Saw a recent post about MPG and thought I'd chime in as well. I have a 2000 Limited with 4WD and about 190,000 miles. I knew when I bought it that it had been well maintained. On the drive back from Sacramento to Temecula, I averaged about 21 MPG. Last week, I drove from Temecula to Alhambra to Riverside and then back to Temecula. I drove anywhere from 65 to 70 MPH. There was almost no traffic so I got lucky there. I did 175.1 miles on 7.19 gallons of gas for 24.35 MPG. Not too shabby considering the engine was an early 90s design (I think).

after getting 20 on a small trip the other day this is possible with a stock setup. if you dont accelerate and decelerate at all you can get good mileage.

It is strange! When I drove around Sacramento area, I too received 21.5 MPG almost all the time (I don't baby the 4runner). If I plan to go to a place, I estimate 20 MPG which always work. Ever since I moved from west coast to south (LA/TX), the MPG dropped to 17.5 MPG.
I'd say don't move from Sac if you want your runner to do 21 MPG.

I can get 21mpg+ all the time. just needs to be flat and go easy on the throttle. I have a roof rack also.

Its all in the foot and tire size. A tail wind and down hills always helps

Put me in a city and not caring ill get 15-16mpg so it can vary.

I have a scan gauge and I do it manual to compare.

I may only get 13mpg but I also didn't pay 2.89 per gallon ($1.94 last fill up). Good thing you are getting over 20 having to pay those prices. :flipoff:

I get an average of 21mpg, with a mix of highway and city driving. I'd say 80% of my driving is highway, cruise set to 62mph. That's my daily commute.

Stock 2002, 161k miles. Factory lowering kit (aka sagging springs).

24mpg on the highway cruising at a low-ish speed is totally possible.

OP also doesn't say if he's auto or manual. For auto that's about the best case scenario I'd think, for a manual that would be no problem.

22 is the best I have ever done with mine and that was shortly after I got it and it had like a soccer mom mall cruiser narrow summer street tread on it

winter, with studded snows and a lot of 4wd I was very happy to get 17.

snow is gone, studded tires off, summer tires on ( which are now not narrow and have a good aggressive tread) filled up the other day and got 20

op, your sample is too small to be relevant. There is quite a margin of error there even if you used the same pump.

At least if the tank was nearly emptied, it would have some value, but on 1/3 of a tank, I don't buy it at all.

Here's my milage over the past 4 years (as long as I've been using Gas Cubby anyway). I have gotten mid 20s but it's rare; usually when I find ethanol free fuel and then do 250 miles all highway without stopping (which I have done). I think if you're doing a lot of highway miles or youre easy with the right foot low 20s isnt crazy. I have a minor lift and I run 265/75s and I'm a conservative driver. My average does suffer a bit because of the short errand trips (as you can see my average per day is low). My 4Runner isn't my DD anymore though.....
