Thanks for the feedback rdruss. Appreciate it! What ended up working great was an exhaust coupler I had laying around. Just so happens it was the perfect diameter for taping the seal in. Talk about lucky lol

Good to hear there's a local shop familiar with the problem. Would you be able to share their name/number, as my 2017 has the same problem. Dealer already replaced the front needle bearing once, but it only lasted a year before the noise came back.

Agree with you there regarding front and rear LSDs. Unfortunately 5th gen 4wd 4Runners don't come with them, only some of the 2wd versions if I'm not mistaken. Not sure how much it costs to get one aftermarket, but I'm guessing not cheap, probably comparable to an aftermarket locker.

I don't think they own Subaru, just a portion of them (a little under 20%). Happened a few years ago.

Or perhaps snowy/icy roads. In slippery conditions 4Runner will have at best 2 driving wheels and 2 slipping wheels (while in 4wd mode). Locking the rear would effectively make it a 3wd vehicle in slippery snow/ice conditions, no?
