I learned a lot on this job. I'm embarrassed to say, but it took me 9 hours to do this. I made more than one mistake on the way. I had trouble getting the big belt pulley off of the crankshaft, so I removed the radiator so I could get a gear puller on it. Turned out it only needed a little...

The right cam and left cam lines are oriented on a "valley" on the belt. Counting the ridges between those, valleys, I count 50 of them. Get a new belt. The amount of work to get back in there to swap it out is not worth it, when you can get a belt at Autozone for $40 or so. Just did...

Oh crap. Yeah... the timing marks on the belt no longer line up with the timing marks on the cam pulleys. Even though the cam pulley timing marks and the crank marks are dead on. I thought that I was skipping a tooth each rotation. Yeah... I am a noob. Thanks for the help.

I'm frustrated. What am I doing wrong? 97 4Runner 3.4L Putting the timing belt on has been a bear. I line up the timing marks, get the belt on, release the tensioner pin. Rotate the marks all the way around by turning the crank bolt. First time around they line up. Second time around...

Okay... I think I am figuring this out. From what I have found, 98 and older 5VZ-FE engines have the torque spec at 184 ft-lbs. 99 through 02 engines torque spec is 217 ft-lbs. Thank you for the help!

There appears to be a discrepancy on what the proper torque for the crank bolt is. I'm reading on this forum that 217ftlbs is the right number. However, two different manuals call out 184 ftlbs. Is there a Toyota tech who can point to a reference that shows 217 is the correct number?

Thanks... what manual is that? The directions are much clearer than my Haynes. I think I'll start a new thread specifically to clarify the crank bolt torque setting.

I wonder why the Haynes manual has it listed as a different spec?
