Questions about timing belt replacement

Collecting parts for a timing belt and water pump swap this weekend.

Noticed on the timing belt that the cam alignment marks are not marked with a "left / right". Instead there is an arrow running horizontally across the belt. I can either position this belt with the arrow towards the engine, or towards the radiator.

1) I believe that this arrow should be positioned towards the radiator. Can someone please confirm for me?

2) My Haynes manual is indicating that the crank nut torque should be set at 184 ft/lbs, yet on this forum I have seen reference to setting it to 200+ftlbs. Any thread locker used on this bolt during reassembly?

3) Also doing waterpump and new thermostat, tensioner pulley and idler pulley. Do I need to replace any seals for camshaft or crankshaft while in here?

Thanks...

Hi Frank,

Since I do not have any direct experience with changing the TB/H20 pump on my own (not until Spring for me) but have helped a friend, I'll will give ya my 02 cents.

I'll pass on judgement concerning the belt to let others chime in.

The crank bolt is to be torqued to 217 ft/lbs. I'd recommend buying a new crank bolt at the dealer (part# 90105-16031 for ya) and placing a small dab of red thread locker on the new bolt.

I have only ever heard of a few leaking cam or crank seals. The latter seems not too hard to tackle, but for the cam seal the pulley can be a pain to remove unless you can see leaks around either one.

Here is a good link:

Take some pics of your endeavor and post them.

The arrow faces forward, check the pic below.

I've wondered about the torque myself because as you said everyone on here says 200+ lbs but my paper 97 FSM says 184. Also there are two different crank bolt p/n's

90105-16031 -for those assembled BEFORE 10/98

90119-16006- for those assembled 10/98 up through 2002 models

Maybe an official tech can clear this up for us....?

I torqued mine (96) to 190 + a little extra and used blue locktite.

Thanks... what manual is that? The directions are much clearer than my Haynes.

I think I'll start a new thread specifically to clarify the crank bolt torque setting.
