Found some things, maybe he was talking about 96-98 limited has a push button to go from 2hi to 4hi and only requires shifting to go into 4lo. Several 97's I'm looking at.

A guy who was selling a 97 3rd gen was telling me 97-99 were the good years for the transfer case as they could not shift right or something. I was searching some but is there anything to what he's saying? I mean if you can't trust a salesman, what's the world coming to?

Thanks Airdreams and all, appreciate the info. I've seen a 91 2wd that is really clean but I think I'm going to go with a 97 4x4 for the 3rd gen engine and diff lock 4x4. It has 200k but timing belt was replaced at 130k. Learning a lot about 4 runners here! Thanks

Do you have timing chain problems with 3rd gen 4's? I had and 80 truck that had a double row chain but my 87 had a single row and it broke on me. Wasn't that much $ to rebuild though.

That's right, sorry. I was looking at a 91 also but it didn't have 4wd. I'll read up on the differences.

I had a Toyota pickup stolen (think it was an 87). Got it back without a scratch on it but the tools were gone. I was glad they didn't destroy it trying to hot wire it like some I've seen. Very easy to steal. Have to check out how hard it is to steal a 91 like I'm looking at... Glad you got...

That's some real collectors items! I'm shopping for second gen, not that clean but maybe something someone has taken good care of and did all the maintenance that I can't do. I see 91's for $2500 but you know that needs to go right in the shop and have a bunch of work done, preventative...

Sounds like starving for fuel. Complex machines, can't just clean the jets in the carburetor.
