3RZ Runners Only

Recently getting poor MPG's around 18L/100km or about 13MPG..

I've cleaned the MAF and it didn't help.

Anyone know how the Fuel pressure regulator works and how to test it? I'm consistently getting 50 psi of pressure and pretty sure that's way high.

Any other common things to check?
Here's a thread that I did chasing the same thing. Tires and suspension do a pretty good number on our little engines. I would definitely look into adjusting your valves. It could make a huge difference.

Thanks, planning to adjust them next week, hopefully that'll help some!
I hope you've adjusted them before. There's a tool that you practically need from yota. It's 50 bucks.

It's a shim under bucket design. You will also need a micrometer to measure the shims. Then you have to order the shims for the ones that are out of spec. Fairly painless but it does take a couple of days to get the shims. I ordered mine through LC.

Thanks. I haven't done it before on a 3rz, but i've got the tool sitting here, and i plan on getting my shims from the dealer. Hopefully they aren't too far out of whack...

I had 7 that were out on mine but out of 24....not too shabby. It is a pita to go through and remove them and then have to put them back in to rotate to the next set.

What mileage are you at? Mine were still in spec at 150,000Km but a little variance on some of the exhausts. I plan to adjust them this summer to get them nice and even at about 180,000Km.

As an interesting aside, I just checked clearances on a new to me 93 corolla wagon with the 7afe. Ins and outs were both perfectly middle of the range and only .001 variance between any. Surprising at 175,000km and very likely never checked before.

Not sure about 3rz himself but mine rests at 276k miles.

Your 3rz is in its prime. Just watch out for a crack in the exhaust manifold. It can happen and will cause a faster wear on the exhaust valves.

The corolla engine is young too.azing that you found a 93 that had that few on it.

Currently sitting at 330,000KM's so i'm thinking its about time for an adjustment.

I checked mine at 200k, they were all within spec. Two of the exhaust values were a little on the tight end but still within the range.

I figure I might need a new head at 500-600k. No one checked them before I got it at 230k

Alright my 3RZ brotha's...
I NEED SOME HELP!!
about 40 mins ago I take off from my house after unloading all my work tools and supplies etc so I couple completely detail and vacuum out the inside of my rig which I got done. So I take off to go grab a bite to eat and I get about 3 miles down the road and I start losing power to my rig, as I'm driving I notice a bog feeling like as if it was flooded, clock on the dash starts dimming, radio won't turn on, couple sputters and back fires that sounded like it came from an exhaust leak spot somewhere, giving it gas losing more power, downshift loss of more power, til the point I coasted over to the side of the road back firing as I try to give it some gas/ shifting til I come to a stop with only just the engine idling it won't go anywhere ..try to do anything it just wants to bog down giving it gas shift to every gear ...nothing just idling.

Also there were no issues today going to work and coming home today..,

Any thoughts ...I just got it home to pop the hood and start going through the steps..

Do you have timing chain problems with 3rd gen 4's?

I had and 80 truck that had a double row chain but my 87 had a single row and it broke on me. Wasn't that much $ to rebuild though.

Fuel pump/filter? Definitely fuel related if you ask me.

You might be onto something there...a direction I was over looking/thinking.
My fuel pump well atleast the (sending unit) I know has been on the out over the last 8-10 months that's when my fuel gauge started reading randomly if at all and Anything above half a tank to full the gas light would come on anything below half the gas light would dim or off.
Also whenever I filled up gas or anything above half tank my rig would have a harder time starting you have to turn the key just a lil bit longer and give a lil push of the gas pedal to start her...

Thanks brotha

I haven't heard of any real issues with timing chains on the 3RZ's...
But not to say it couldn't be my issue.

Thanks brotha

Sounds like it idles OK though? Could be the throttle position sensor if that's the case. Sounds like it's getting too much fuel to me.

Well hmmmm...if this were the case what then would create the extra fuel dump? To get down to the root cause of it all?
Cause I do have a cel on now stating leak/evap emissions I will have to look up the code number it's tagged with I can't remember.

Possibly the ecu thinks you're at WOT, when you've actually only got the throttle body partially open, causing way over rich conditions.

I would definitely get to fixing that. It may be something else...
But you know that's an issue so it could cloud something easy to diagnose if you weren't having sending unit issues.

Do any of you 3rz guys have any tricks for getting to that bottom screw on throttle position sensor? I haven't tried yet, but it looks like I'm going to have to remove a bunch of stuff to get that bottom screw out. Any time saving advice would be appreciated.
