    '96 Fuel Filter Replacement

Soooo, my SR5 has been feeling sluggish lately despite recent plugs/air filter and a good supply of 93 octane gas. I decide to replace the fuel filter. Not wanting to wear fuel, I let it sit 24 hours to let any pressure bleed off. I crack the forward tube and the gas starts flowing. I...

    After 160,000 faithful miles.......

I'm going to pull the right bank of plugs this weekend and see if #2 is looking different. I should check out Ebay to see if there's a cheap #2 coil to troubleshoot with as well. Did that once on my SVX and cured the problem for very little $$

    After 160,000 faithful miles.......

I considered that, but it was replaced less than 20K miles ago. If the "misfire" happened 100% of the time, I'd be SERIOUSLY looking at the belt/cams.

    winshield poll

A deflector is a help. While it won't keep fullsize rocks and debris from hitting the windscreen, it will keep the smaller particulate from directly contacting the glass' surface.

    After 160,000 faithful miles.......

...My '96 SR5 is throwing a few Check Engine situations at me. Lately, the engine has been misfiring. Some days, it doesn't do this at all, some days, it does this after warming up. Some days, it does it from a cold start. It always feels the same and is drivable (enough to get me home)...

It's 2 years old, a pretty heavy duty Sears Die-Hard.

Check Engine Light = ECU Battery????

That's what a scan of my '96 SR5 said when hooked up to my diagnostic computer (Auto X-ray EZ-Scan) Code won't reset, what does it mean? 4Runner is running well with no obvious problems.

    96 SR5 Starting Miseries

Toyota made it SUPER-EASY to change the lock/tumbler. If you can get the key to turn as far as accessory, there is a little button to push which allows you to pull the mechanism out, attached to the key! New unit slides in and clicks. 5 minutes, in and out!!

    96 SR5 Starting Miseries

Mystery solved! It was the starter contacts. Replaced both for $18 and I'm back on the road. It's the SVX's turn to be the driveway queen! The key problem resolved itself.....no idea what brought that on. So, if you have the same symptoms, save $300+ and check out...

    96 SR5 Starting Miseries

Thanks for the reply! I am 99% sure that I'll be replacing the tumbler & the starter. Can't start it to get a diagnostic anywhere, so, it looks like it's driveway-bound until I R&R the parts. I'll do a search about replacing the tumbler.

    96 SR5 Starting Miseries

Started out where, on rare occasion, turning the key would make the starter solenoid click, but no rotation. Engine would turn on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. This would happen once or twice a month. Lately, it was happening more frequently and taking 5~10 attempts to get the starter to do it's...
