After 160,000 faithful miles.......

...My '96 SR5 is throwing a few Check Engine situations at me.


Lately, the engine has been misfiring. Some days, it doesn't do this at all, some days, it does this after warming up. Some days, it does it from a cold start. It always feels the same and is drivable (enough to get me home).


I ran a diagnostic (I have an Autoxray rig) and here's what comes up:

Code P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire

Code P1600 ECU Battery

She's ALWAYS been serviced on time, had religous oil changes and is kept garaged and clean.

Any recommendations before I start tearing things apart?

just a stab in the dark but would the timing chain effect any of these problems?

I considered that, but it was replaced less than 20K miles ago. If the "misfire" happened 100% of the time, I'd be SERIOUSLY looking at the belt/cams.

you tried replaced the ignition coil for cylinder 2?

also, its a timing belt... not chain

I'm going to pull the right bank of plugs this weekend and see if #2 is looking different. I should check out Ebay to see if there's a cheap #2 coil to troubleshoot with as well. Did that once on my SVX and cured the problem for very little $$
