O.K.
Here's a chopped 2nd gen. for 'ya.
It's been on C's list for quite a while now.
Asking $1,200.

I had a 2nd gen before my current 3rd gen, and I wouldn't buy another 2nd gen. You can make it into a decent crawler/wheeler, but if I were you, I'd just do the same stuff to your 3rd gen instead. Better motor and way more powerful, about the same size, better interior, stronger stock body (if you aren't going to cage it). A 22RE in a 2nd gen 4runner is so painfully slow you'll want to shoot yourself everytime you go up a hill. Just my $.02. I think the FJ40 would be cool too.

Remove the fiberglass top and you have open air wheeling.
Get one that is an SR5 & you also get a sunroof, even open-er air.

Here is one for $2,500 already lifted, all you need is lockers, gears & a plane ticket

I am a jeep wrangler guy for off-road but this would be my choice if I was doing another off-road vehicle. Of the two options you mention I would go with the FJ. Straight axles are the only way to go for harder technical trails. You can do solid axle if you have the ability and/or resources, but I would rather have a vehicle with it from the start.

I highlighted is what set the 4Runner apart from other off road vehicles, for me anyway.

After checking out some FJ40's online, i change my vote from the 2nd gen to the FJ. The first thing should be an engine/trans swap: gas 4.3(v-6) to 6.2L(v-8) or a 4BTA Cummins-5.9L TD Cummins. Go for a diesel, im not sure what transmission or transfer case, thats where other people come in....

Good idea, cause with about $500 in parts you can go from 90hp to 140hp and 155 torque to 260 ft/lbs, and probably 35mpg, in an SUV! With the $900 turbo you can go to 170 hp and 300+ft/lbs of torque! ISH

Best part is neither of those modifications affect the life of the motor!

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks there's nothing wrong with the ABS.

2J, I'm intrigued. Are you going to mod the engine at all? Have you driven in one? I have one, and I'll tell you this even stock engine with Intake and exhaust. When the 2nd turbo comes online it's a fairly hard power surge and even more harder if you have a free flowing intercooler w/nice piping. That's axle snapping territory...

I agree that computer controlled engines are easy to tune, but what kind of transmission and t-case choices are available to bolt to the VW engine? I know that there are Samurai adapters, and assume that there is something for Toyotas as well. I look forward to seeing this very cool build.

Would love that if it can carry a go kart. I was planning of having a truck that can hold my son go kart when we go to some go karts tracks around our town.
