I did it

Finally I made the move and got a DSLR. I know it is not all about the gear but this is a needed improvement over the gopro I was using (now selling to a friend who will actually do video with it :biggrin1

. I ordered a D7000, 18-55 kit, and a 35-70. After borrowing a friend's canon sl1, I was hooked. Now to wait till Thursday and Friday for it all to arrive.

I'm not familiar with Nikon DX lenses, but you've got a fair bit of focal length crossover with those two. You might want to consider returning the 35-70 and instead getting a 55-200 to maximize your focal length coverage for the money. Either that or consider getting a fast standard prime like the 35mm 1.8 for low light shooting.

Yeah I know there is. The 35-70 is just one of those that you can get really really cheap and doesn't suck so that is why I got it a full $20 for a working lens that is still by Nikon and not a third party knock off. It is more of a use it for the time being until I have more money. I am planning on getting a real fast prime and a higher zoom that is a 70-300 so the 35-70 can fill in the gap from 55 of the kit to the 70 of the bigger zoom.

Anyone on the lookout for the northern lights tonight? I can often see them from my place but we're completely socked in tonight

this is a bucket list item for me. I would love to see them. I want to plan a trip to Iceland one of these days

I am way too far south here in the Phoenix AZ area to see them! But when I used to live in Northern Ontario (near Wawa) I could them a lot. I still remember seeing shimmering curtains of green light - it was quite the show!

I will be somewhere between between the national parks in South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Colorado from July 19th-July 30th and hope the Northern Lights will show themselves at least once during those two weeks preferably while in the northern back country portion of Glacier National Park.

I'd sell both lenses on Ebay and buy the 18-140 VR kit lens for $350-ish. It is lighter and smaller than the 18-200.

Be sure to buy a USA model

Yes I know that they are not amazing lenses. The thing is right now I am tight on money and they are real cheap and just something to get going. And yes I know it was kinda backwards, feel like I went big on the body and little on the lenses (comparatively at least).

I will probably be getting nicer lenses soon. Have plans for a 24mm or 35mm prime. And I will look at the 18-140 for sure.

Here is a night-lapse I did with my hero 4 and runner on my way back to school... turned out a lot cooler than I thought it would. Around 6000 pictures and a 2.5 hour drive with a pit stop I got this short clip..

you could totally skip the intro (skip to 20 seconds), it's to long but i think it fits well with the song..

I don't know. I had it on auto shutter so anywhere from 2 to 30 seconds. Just depended on the light available

This picture was taken after I waxed my runner. This is the reflection off the paint. I was lucky enough to have great lighting to capture this. This was also an iPhone pic.

Just ordered a used Nikon D5100 today with the 18-55mm lens I believe. Excited to get it as I have always loved photography. Any tips for a noob?

Yup, when you get the camera make sure to RTFM with the camera in hand. I learned so much about my camera by going through the manual and for every feature I knew I would use often I'd be sure to try it out right there. Really helped me to learn the features and where they are in the menus. Also handy to download a PDF of the manual onto your phone or tablet so if you're out shooting somewhere and can't remember how to turn something on/off you can check right there.

Other than that, just start taking pictures. Take the same picture at different apertures, shoot the same thing from different angles, just shoot a lot. Also, you have a zoom lens, but try setting it at one focal length and using your feet to zoom in and out for a bit as well. There's lots of great reading online too at sites like Digital Photography School and Photography Life.

Went out fishing yesterday and remembered to bring my camera for once. Good thing too since the fishing was slow. Couple scenery shots and some dog portrait practice. Really loving the Fuji mirrorless setup.
