Actually the liability for this will fall to the transport/trucking company. That may or may not be BP. What a mistake to make though! That's worse than crawling around a refinery unit, coming up too quickly and slamming your hardhat/head into a pipe or piece of equipment. Then you hope that no one noticed....but of course someone at the other end of the unit is laughing their a$$ off.
Of course this has NEVER happened to me :biggrin2:

Fuel Mix-Up
We had the opposite situation here in the Richmond area. A tanker driver accidentally put unleaded gasoline into the underground tank that was supposed to hold diesel fuel.

We had four or five of our heavy trucks end up with unleaded gasoline being dispensed from the diesel fuel pump. Not good! The ones that merely "topped off" ended up running rough, but were able to get up the road okay until they burned off some of it. A few others that got 1/2 a tank or more of the tainted fuel had to be towed; along with having the tanks drained & the fuel filters replaced.
Our company's fuel credit cards only allow us to purchase on-road diesel fuel, so there was no chance that a driver used the wrong fuel (the first thing everyone thinks, of course. Doh!) - and there is a computerized record of every transaction, the time of day and the number of the pump used.
Since we all have "saddle tanks" (one on each side of the truck), we only use the pump that has two nozzles -- and it only dispenses diesel fuel.
Yuck!

Did you guys have any truck engines damaged? The preignition of the naphtha puts a lot of stress on the pistons/rods/shaft. Of course in a gasoline car the fuel just won't burn so no real risk of damage to the drivetrain. Then again the diesel engines are much heavier and more robust....maybe the can take the abuse?

As far as I know, there was no internal engine damage. Every diesel truck we have is equipped with the new 'electronic' engines - and the computer pretty much shuts it down if something is amiss. (This can be a pain, though, as we have had to pay expensive towing bills for mere sensors that malfuncitoned.)
With the tanks being drained and the fuel filters replaced, the trucks were soon back on the road.

Those diesel engines are indeed tough. With compression ratios of about 18:1 and internal pressure that would turn a car engine into metal fudge, they have to be able to withstand a lot of stress.
My favorite medium-duty engine has to be the Navistar (International) DT466 (inline six-cylinder turbodiesel) - virtually bulletproof in every way. They just keep on ticking! We had a few tandem-axle straight trucks with the DT530 - purely a beast of an engine found in dump trucks, cement mixers, etc., etc., but they've been replaced with Sterling Acterras in recent years. We have some International tractors all have Cummins ISM engines - strong & powerful.

Those trusty old Internationals have been replaced with Sterlings (pure junk from Freightliner), which have been nothing but trouble. We have '07 to '09 models, most of which have Cummins 6.7L and 8.3L engines - along with two road tractors that have Mercedes-Benz power (strong & quiet). The main problem has involved electronics and other stuff on the trucks, although the Cummins engines seem to be doing well.
We have some new Hino trucks (made by Toyota) and they never have to go to the shop for anything but routine maintenance. Whatever they have under the hood makes a Cummins-powered truck look like a slow boat to China. The only bad thing is that the Hinos are not "heavy enough" underneath, lack air seats and they don't make a tandem-axle version. That aside, their overall quality blows away International, Freightliner and Sterling.
Okay, enough about that. What I wonder his how many people with diesel-powered pickup trucks end up putting in unleaded fuel by mistake.

Does BP have any affiliation with British Layland? lol anyway that does suck. for those people that have to put up with the stupid people in both the gas station and the tanker company getting the run around. If that was me I'd be ready to go to jail if you know what I mean.

I've never had an issue between filling the TDI Jetta + Bug up and filling the 4runner/gasser's up. Seems like it would take an idiot to mix up a diesel with a gas engine, especially when on the newer quieter diesels have warning labels on the gas caps or in the fuel filler or on the fuel door, on the new mercedes blutech i think it says "remember assh*le you have push the button the that says diesel"

Gasoline is a really good solvent that cleans up all the stuff in the fuel system on diesel vehicles. I'm not saying to run a DIESEL on GAS (for the dumb people) it just sucks that you gotta fill the tank with the right fuel. I haven't made this mistake and hope not but we all have our moments. some worse than others.
