Well, i just examined my garage door. At least for my garage, the release handle is flush mounted against the slider...so, there is no gap for any hook to get into. What i did then was to take out the handle at the bottom of the string.

Thoughts? Am i safe?

I think it depends more on the garage door and the framing around it.

The garage door they did demo on had a weather strip against the top and appears to be a fiberglass door with a metal brace behind it (giving it some flex) that allows the wedge to push at the top edge.

Just like cars, if an intruder wants in bad enough, they're getting in.

The problem is that even without the weather stipping, the metal on garage doors are flimsy. In addition, from some reading this morning, robbers have now gone with high-powered battery-operated drills...so, they just drill small holes in your garage door and use the hook method (as in video above).

I looked at my doors and this is actually not plausible the way they showed. They would just break the glass and be in around 3 seconds..!

I think so, at least much better than before. But like you and others mentioned nothing is going to stop a determined pro who is willing to either break a window or drill a hole, etc.

I have the other style release in which I needed to cable tie it up so it cannot be moved with a hook/hanger. Also I blacked out the windows with these...Blackout EZ Window Cover. Nice quality for the price and can be easily removed when working in the garage for long periods and you want some natural light.

One thing I often hate about my garage, no door inside the garage to the main house, can be a benefit in a garage break-in of these sorts.

Although i agree that an experienced thief can get into anything, i also do not want to hand it to them on a silver platter!! In addition, with desparate times, we're going to see more amateur theives/highschool punks trying to break into homes/cars. So, every little thing helps IMO.

In fact, over the next few weeks, we're getting a metal front door with glass and iron bars. No, it is not those "in-the-hood" type doors. It is something like this:


Basically, it is a steel door with iron bars in front (in any design you want). Insulated glass is behind the iron bars. This is great for safety because it allows you to open the glass panel (from the inside) and still have a locked door with iron bars in front for protection. This allows you to receive small packages, talk to people, etc. without ever having to open your front door. I feel a lot better with this door when my wife (& kids) are at home alone. And these days, i always answer the door with a loaded & chambered gun hidden behind me. Paranoia gets the best of me sometimes....

This is what i did today...bought 4 inch metal "mending plates" (4 quantity) at Walmart, then use zip ties to connect them together. With these plates attached to the sides of the slider (or whatever you call it), you can still pull down the release handle and push it back up. At the same time, it blocks any hooks from getting into the critical space.

Nah, just call beforehand with full description of what you will be wearing, anyone else with you, fax me your criminal record & driver's license beforehand, do not wear any sunglasses on that day, no hats, hands always visible in front, and please wear shoes that can be easily taken off for examination. But, the good side is that i don't own a body scanner....

especially with "how to" videos all over youtube.

i do like the your idea with the metal pieces. smart and easy.

but still,
no better protection than the one that is on your hip.
