While the rest of you hanging out in Big Bear, I tagged along with the TW crew to go check out Rowher Flats in the name of a potential run there and to check out something a little closer to home (1 hr 15 mins vs 2 - 2 1/2 hours)
The Good:
There's plenty of camping across 3 staging areas. We were setup in the 3rd staging area and could easily park all of our rigs there plus there was ample camping space along with a pit toilet.
The Bad:
Both Lookout and Rowher flats leaving from the staging areas are very much black diamond and require 4wd. Rowher MIGHT be doable going up locked, but lookout definitely is not. There is a 2wd friendly fire road that allows you to go around a lot of the stuff from the Boquet Canyon side to get up to Lookout point. From there you can take Rowher back down. I wouldn't suggest taking Lookout down without low range 4wd.
The rangers do patrol the staging areas and you need a 5 dollar adventure pass. They will ticket you for it.
It was bloody hot. The 4runner said 98 at one point, and another Tacoma said his hit 102. So this might not be a good July or August run. Hard to say what the weather will do though. There were 2 spots at the staging area 3 with shade and fire pits, didn't get a good look at the other 2.
That being said, here's a look at Lookout to Boquet Canyon, back up Boquet to lookout point, and down Rowher trail. The part where I pass the black Tacoma on the right (towards the beginning) is where [MENTION=136692]SixthSnail[/MENTION] almost binned it.
