00 4Runner Exhaust Rattle

Hi guys/gals
I have been looking around the forum and decided to finally join in. Its nice to see all of this great information.

I picked up another 4Runner 2 months ago....traded in my 99 Passat for it. Our 99 has been great so when I saw the 00 I decided to buy it. It's Black with Beige Leather interior. Has the sport package 16 in wheels r boards etc....has everything except 4WD and Climate control. I even have the wood trim. Anyway since I bought it I've noticed a noise that is pretty annoying. When the truck is in drive at normal operating temp at idle the exhaust rattles like crazy. I had my wife hold her foot on the brake while I checked and I saw the whole exhaust shake this causes an annoying rattle inside the car. If I push on the exhaust giving it some resistance the sound stops. Dealer says its a baffle inside the muffler. I beg to differ.....any ideas?

Did you look the whole system over?. all the hangers in place, plus they like to put heat shields in lots of places that sometimes rust and come loose. Did the dealer even look at it or just told you that?.

Yes I checked everything.....compared it to my 99 just incase. One dealer did look at the heat shileds and adjusted one. That did not fix the problem. The other said they looked at it and thought it was a baffle in the muffler that was causing the exhaust to rattle. They said the only way to fix it would be a new muffler. I would agree, but the whole exhaust shakes.....and then it stops...and then it starts up again......gets pretty annoying when you're sitting at a stop light. If I put it in Neutral the noise stops completely. I thought it could be the driveshaft at first but after checking and seeing the exhaust shake I knew it was not that.
Could it be spark plugs?
 
Maybe your idle is low?. If it is OK when in Park or Neutral your truck idles a little higher then when it's in gear. Check to see what your Idle should be set at. Just does not make sense that it is your muffler the truck is not that old. How many miles do you have on it?.
 
The truck has 54K on it. I thought of just turning the idle up but when I compared it to my other one it seems to be the same. What is strange is its erratic.
 
You could always pull the plugs and see if they need replaced. Maybe a vacum leak.dirty fuel filter. Is the idle erratic only when in park or neutral and how much.
The sad thing is it could be many things. I am always weary of dealerships they will say anything to take your money without even knowing the true cause of your problem.
before you start putting money into it, take somewhere else and get a second opinion. maybe a trusted mechanic you or someone you know uses.

no the idle is not erractic......the rattle is. I'm going to check the pulgs just in case....they probably need to be replaced anyway.
 
exhaust rattles

I have the same problem with my 04 4runner limited v8.... The dealer told me the same thing. "It's the muffler!!!" sucks...sorry no help. cjj
 
Magnaflow Rattle

I was looking for someone else who had a similar problem and found this thread. Were you ever able to fix it?

I found that the exhaust rattle only happens when the idle is low. For example at a stop with the vehicle in drive. For me I found that it is a problem with the out pipe from the muffler tapping the right frame member just before spare. I was thinking about trying to shim it with some heat shield insulation. I am curious if you found a solution?
 
Exhaust rattle when brake is pressed in DRIVE

I'm having the same issue with my '01 SR5 4WD w/ 125k mi. on it. Sitting at a stop light in DRIVE with foot on the brake the exhaust pipe and/or muffler makes an annoying rattling sound; shifting it into PARK or NEUTRAL makes the sound go away.
My next move will probably be to check the heat shields and connections, then replace the muffler if necessary. I don't mind replacing the muffler if that does indeed fix the problem. Anyone with any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

In areas with road salt I notice the exhaust hanger after the cat usually rusts off. Give that a look over.
 
So who else cut out the muffler and tada we have a solution. I do recall my exhaust making a noise some time ago and it does happed to be a magnaflow. How loud do you think it would be w/o the muffler for a day?

No one ? Ok I went a different route. Went to two muffler shops. Keep in mind I have after market exhaust installed 7 years ago. The previous install was too close to the crossmembers. 1st shop said I need a new muffler $450 (bwahahahahaha), 2nd shop a year later said components were could, they recommended starting over with the piping $250. Done. No more rattle.
