I think it's not just an easy swap. In your 1996, the 4runner's HVAC used cable pulleys to adjust temp and zones I believe. The 01 and 02 auto climate control (I think non auto climate control as well) is much more complex than that as it uses electric motors to adjust the temp and zones.

that's what i was thinking there is a harness in the back of the climate control unit and i believe mine is mechanical, sure wish i had it looks a lot better and a little more up to date, but i looked up the units on ebay last night and they are going used for 350.00 wow! and also saw a couple threads that state people have issues with them. maybe thats why ebay offers to send yours in and rebuild it for 150.00 lol, I think its more hassle than its worth now that i think about it

I think you are better off without it. I have always hated digital automatic climate controls. Back in '99, I was ecstatic when I found out that 5speeds only came in SR5's with manual climate control--that meant I had no chance of getting one. I don't like them when they aren't broken, and they break a lot, on any car.

Can the "Dial/knob" one in the later SR5's be swapped into an older "slider" style? I personally after having used all three think the dial one is best, and I might be down grading to an older 4runner. Id also like to swap the steering wheel, I saw that Pitbull was looking at doing this but I am not sure if it was possible.

Don't quote me on it but, I think the 3 dial/knob uses the same setup as the auto climate control. Maybe someone can clarify that.

i always thought dial worked off vacuum, maybe not but my wj has about 15 vac lines going to the back of the panel and its dial setup, steering wheel i doubt, i like the stock 3rd gen steering wheels haha

the 01 has a button on the fresh air, where as the 96 has a slider level.

I would say no.

Here's a pic of the 01.

Any have more insight? I found this from a search. I've always hated the slider control (never can get it quite the right temp) but I'm not about to tear through my 4runner without at least a general plan of attack. :bigok:

You would need some assemblies.

The heat exchanger assembly from a 99 newer ltd.
the controller
center cluster trim
wire sub harness
day light sensor
outside temp senor
inside temp sensor
blower resister pack

You can make the climate control work just by supping power, ground and ignition power .

You should be able to use your existing ac components, heater valve and duct work.
