01-02 Limited 4x4 4runner guys, I need your help!

I am trying gathering parts to adapt a multi mode T-case to my Tacoma.

I am looking for info on the ECU part of the system. I believe the ECU to be a silver box, with an orangish red lable. PN- 89533-35170

Would any one be willing to pull their kick panal off and take a picture of their ECU? It needs to be 01-02 since they have electronic front diffs.

The kick panel as in the panel to the bottom left of the steering wheel where the fuses are? Since I didn't see anything that was silver with an orange label, though I also don't know anything about ECUs...

The Main ECU is located on the passenger side behind the dashboard, under the airbag.

The Body ECU is located on the Drivers side. The fuze panel is where the Body ECU is.

I believe the OP was referring to the VSC/TRAC ECU.

Here's the best pic I have at the moment

Or, if you just want to know where it's located (V16-V19)...

I am looking for the F7 4wd ecu. I believe this to control the multi mode transfer case found in the limited 4wd 4Runners

It's found on any 01-02 4runner. Pretty sure they all came with the CDl. I don't have mine at work today or I'd get you a picture.

Ok, Im a Tacoma guy, so I know very little about 4runners. What is CDI?

So ALL 4wd 01-02 4runners have the multi mode transfer cases?

I want to be 100% sure I buy the right ecu the 1st time.

Does anyone have a 2001 or 2002 4runner wiring diagram they could share? I have a 99 diagram, 1999 4runners still had Vacuum ADD. I am using an electric ADD diff. I want to run it all with the ecu I am looking for.

One last thing. Is it correct that 2000 was the last year for the E-locker in the 4runner platform?

CDL is center differential lock or multi-mode. The picture below is the switch for it. I have an 01 SR5 that is equipped with this, just don't have it with me today. If you find a 4runner with that switch next the dimmer near the steering column, you should be fine.

I'm new to 4Runners as well, but the 3rd Gen buyer's guide (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/82033-3rd-gen-4runner-buyers-guide.html) has a wealth of information. According to it, 2000 was the last year that the E-locker was available.

Ahhh..... The T-case I have is a multi mode VF3AM from a 99 limited 4Runner. I assume the transfer cases them selves are the same from 99 to 02. The only thing that is different is that the 01-02 have the CDL button, and a 4H-N-4L lever and the button on the knob controls 2H-4H, and the 99 and 00 have a J-shift lever and the button on the transfer case shifter knob is what controls the CDL.

Does that seem right? I want to use the 01-02 4wd ECU to control the T-case and the front diff.

Make since?:llama:

The CDL gives you many options. You can use it for AWD, which gives you traction control on all 4 by pressing the button on the j-shifter. You can then press the button on the dash to lock the CDl which gives you full time power to all 4 (no traction control). You also have the options of 4hi and 4low.

Multi-mode or CDl just gives you different drive and traction options. It can be a pain in the ass at times as well. Most people that have 01-02's do the Andy MOD 2.0 so they can turn the traction control off without loosing the ABS.

I thought so....

E-locker and multi-mode are not the same. The e-locker is a locker in the in rear differential. The multi-mode is a transfer case locker only available on the 01's and 02's.

Right, I understand that. I have a 99 Tacoma, with a 2002 Tundra 4.7L v8 mated to a 1996 R150 Manual trans, and a 1996 FZJ80 LC rear axle with E-Locker. Lots of mixing and matching. I have the E-Locker wired up via a DPDT relay using the stock RR DIFF LOCK switch. I was hoping to use the 01-02 4wd ECU to run the Elocker, front ELECTRONIC ADD Diff and the Muti mode T-case. However It looks like Toyota didnt offer all of them at the same time.

YES!!! Thank you!!

gahh.. you guys are responding faster than I can keep up. I understand the function of the multi mode T-case.

My plan- Use a 1999 Multi mode T-case with the J-shifter and an 01-02 4wd ECU to control it. It seems to me that my plan will work. The ONLY difference I can find in the 99-00 and 01-02 multi mode t-cases is that the 99-00 have the J-shift lever and the 01-02 have a lever for L-N-H. in the 99-00 the 2H-4H shift with the lever enguages a swith that tells the ECU what position the motor on the back of the t-case to move to. The 01-02 doesnt have the J-shifter but has an extra button on the dash.

With all due respect Durk, someone might forget to lock up the center diff!! -has made a Diff one way or the other for me more than once! LOL!

I just meant there were no variations in the factory equipped 4wd in '01='02 so no risk of getting the wrong one when sourcing an ECU. Operator error applies to any model.

I was responding to the questions asked in the OP's Posts #8 and #9. I never saw his post just above mine as he did that while I was typing and i just hit submit and went on my way. Now it reads all confused. I should have quoted the other two OP posts.

OP: I think your plan will work fine. The fact that the Rear Diff Lock was not offered in '01-'02 should not be a problem as it does not connect directly to the 4wd ECU or the TC, only to things you aren't changing like the ECM, ABS, and Combination Meter (Speedo).

I'm pretty comfortable with wiring, so if you need help as this goes along, please post up.

Now the real challenge would be Multi-mode, e-locker, and a 5-speed.

This thread blew up pretty fast. I was responding the time as everyone else I think.

Thank you for your help. I was hoping that the 01-02 still had the elocker as it would connect to the 4wd ecu and clean up the wiring. As of now I have a homemade elocker harness and the locker works as a stand alone unit.

Just give you a guage on what's going on, I have a 99 Tacoma with a 2002 Tundra v8, 1996 Tacoma R150 transmission, (soon to be 1999 4Runner Multi mode T-case, 1996 FJ80 elocker axle, and a 2001 Sequoia front ADD diff... Its what I think is the best of the late 90 early 00s Toyota Parts. Lol.
