I am a noob when it comes to 4runners and pretty much cars in general. I went to look at a 4runner today and tried to figure out how the whole 4wd system works...i thought i knew more than i did but soon figured out i didnt know enough, the dealer didnt know much about how the 4wd system worked either. What position does the shifter have to be in to engage the 4wd button? Can someone explain to me how the system works for a 2001 SR5. It would be really really helpful! Thanks! I know this is most likely a repeat thread, sorry for that.

Did it have the 4WD button? You don't have to move the transfer case shifter at all. Just hit the button, roll forward a bit and the 4WD will engage.

Since 1996, 4runners have had electronic 4wd.

It's a button, you press it, roll forward, voila! :driving:

Now Lo Range 4wd, that's more fun :naughty:

Not all of them, just Limited's had that until '01, then they all got it. Both my '97 & '00 SR5 have to actually be shifted into 4WD.
