01 Dashbord looks like a X-mas tree!! HELP

Ok I do all the work to my landlords vehicles and well a engine light came on in the 01 4runner. There are a total of 4 lights on the engine light, TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC, and ECT PWR. The ECT PWR has been on for about a mouth and it seams to come on whenever someone other than me drives it, I looked it up in the manual and it said Driving Pattern Mode (makes sense).The other three came on at the same time a week ago. I am taking it that the TRAC OFF means the traction control is off and it feels like it, but I have no idea what the VSC TRAC light means. I took it to Auto Zone to check it and it got a code P0442, Evap Emissions system leak detected. That is 4 possible parts the Fuel cap(I hope), EVAP line leakage, Pump module (witch ever one that is) and the Canister..... So can anyone give me any sort of advice if you too have run into this. its a 01 V6 2WD Automatic silver edition it has 43k miles if that helps.

I don't really have the funds to just start replacing stuff

(thx for the help with the ECT PWR button that I didn't know about)

(TRAC and VSC are off, just got it sideways and laid about 15ft of rubber just leaving a parking lot quickly)

I am not sure about the ECT button, but when all the other lights come on, it means emissions, or check the engine. They just light up the other lights to get your attention. Did it get your attention?

When my engine light, VSC, Trac came on, it turn out to be a O2 sensor. Not sure what your code means, but you are on the right track. Let me know when you want to sell that 4Runner, a 01 with 43k sounds really nice to me.

I mite take out the O2 sensors and clean them to see if that helps... just had to do that with the Sidekick a month ago and it fixed it. I mean it couldn't hurt right lol

There is an ECT button somewhere (mine is on my center console). Push it and that light will go off. The ECT is Electronically Controlled Transmission and it just changes the points at which the tranny shifts into the next gear (the engine will to rev higher rpms before shifting).

wow I over looked that button like a thousand times lol right next to the rear window button so it must get hit by accident a lot lol thx.

I thought you meant the ECT button came on all by itself. I use the ECT button when I use my camper. Glad to know you accidentally turned it on.

I thought it did. Like I said it would come on when someone else drove it. It would normally turn off in a week or two(when someone else drove it). I have heard of the newer cars learning how you drive to compensate and save gas and thats what I thought it was when the manual said Driving Pattern Mode. but now I know why it was eating up so much gas. thx again

No one has anymore info on the P0442 code? going to the stealership tomorrow to pay $20.52+tax for a gas cap and hope it fixes it...

I hate for you to throw money at the problem. I remember going to my mechanic and he knew it was the O2 sensor. If you go to the dealership you may ask about the code to the service manager.

You could always have them look at it, or your local mechanic and then they could call you when they find the problem. Then you have a choice to get it done or so no and take it and do it yourself. I just hate the idea of guessing, it could be rather expensive.

I will ask about it when I go in and I'm going to look for a switch to do the anymod later. but if the cap don't fix it and I can't find a leak then it sits tell we can ether sell the other car or pay someone to slap me in the face and say it was this stupid...:dammit: Thx for the help

you may not even need a new gas cap it just may be loose. my lights came on when i didn't tighten my cap all the way. Make sure you get a couple clicks and your good. The lights came off within 24 hours i cant remember how long they took to shut off. But im saying that cause im pretty sure i got the same code as you

Checked and did that a few days ago and cleared the code, thx though.

So went to the Stealership and bought the gas cap (waiting to put it on, was told you have to drive it 100miles before it checks the system again). well I asked some of the mechanics at the dealership and I told them I was getting a P0442 code on my 01 4runner. 3 techs looked at me and said they have never seen it. :wtf: One guy disappears and comes back to tell me that he looked it up in the computer and theirs no such code. MY LEFT NUT!!! F YOU BIG TWO TOYOTA!!!!

Well I will be putting the new gas cap tomorrow and clearing the code. Then I will be driving out to Roosevelt lake and back to see if the code comes back or gos away witch ever its going to be. Wish me luck cuz I hope tracking down a faulty line isn't the next step.

They are not very thorough or informed. P0442 is possible, in fact I saw it on my car once, then it never came back (I had holes in my filler pipe, replaced the pipe). It is right there in the manual, so I am not sure how they couldn't find it.

If the gas cap doesn't fix it, you can glance under it and see if there is any rust or damage on the filler pipe, or if the accordion pipe connecting the filler pipe to the tank has slipped off a little or something like that. These are easy and free possible catches.

thx for the advice I hope it don't come to that but thx lol. and as far as I'm concerned with Big Two Toyota is they couldn't find it cuz I wasn't paying them to find/fix it.

well its official the TRAC and VSC are off. I just got the truck sideways and laid 15ft of rubber to try and catch someone that I was following.... I only gave it like half the peddle and sideways lol

Well I when out to Roosevelt Lake and then out to four peeks for some off-road fun. Code never came back and I figured it wouldn't after I saw the old gas caps o ring. thx for your help guys
