'02 2WD Auto running rough

My '02 runs rough. Not at idle, only when driving and on the gas. It started recently. It's almost like driving on washboard gravel, but not quite that rough, like the lines making up the "washboard" are smaller. I changed out the fuel filter. The plugs and plug wires are less than 10,000 miles old. Took it to Auto Zone to connect to their code reader. No trouble codes. What is wrong with my 4Runner?

So does the engine seem to miss or is the ride rough? Or both? Lubed driveline? Tires balanced? :cowboy:
 
It's a vibration like a washboard road, but I believe it is the engine because it stops when I get off the gas. Could it be tires with those symptoms? The front tires are pretty worn. Replaced the rears only a while back. I was short on funds. Haven't gotten around to replacing the fronts.

rotate the tires to see if there is a difference. I would go ahead and jack it up to check for balljoints and tie rods also
 
Does it change with engine speed or road speed?

I would guess a problem with the driveshaft. The 2WD driveshaft can either have u-joint issues or the the shaft itself can wear out (rubber section in the middle).

is the 4wd shaft solid? what is the difference?

2WD: Slip yoke on transmission output, two single u-joints at each end and the main shaft has a rubber isolator between two concentric tubes (doesn't slide, just absorbs vibration).

4WD: bolts to transfer case output, front double-cardan CV, slip yoke in the shaft, rear single u-joint.

The rear diff pinion angle is also different due to the different driveshaft design.
