'03 4runner 4wd knob

I just got my 4runner and I was wondering how to engage 4wd and how to know if it is on or not. I've read the manual and it just talks about what happens when the its H4 unlocked and locked, same with the L4. I have the 4runner where there are only two options on the knob and it is the H4 and L4, I've seen on some other 4runners that there is another option, H2, but I'm guessing thats the two wheel drive, which my car is on normally. I've also read about how you need to drive a certain speed for the 4wd to engage? is that true?

If you only have an H4 and L4 then you must have the V8 and it's full time 4WD. To switch into L4 stop the car, put it in neutral and flip the switch. It should flash for a few seconds and then engage.

V8 engine has full time 4wd/Awd/4x4.

Okay thanks, I understand now. and yes I do have the v8 because I was told that the I could change my car into 2wd and 4wd by the guy that changed my tires. Thats why I didn't understand the manual.
