Can't get my 2003 4R 4WD to engage. 4WD "motor" or transfer case shift actuator chirps or beeps when 4WD is activated. Unplug "motor" or transfer case shift actuator and a different chirp or beep is heard closer to the passenger side fire wall. Dash idicator light blink in 4WD High, light blink and beeping is heard when switched to 4WD Low. Any advice as to how to troubleshoot?

DOCMT, in an attempt to be more clear...I removed the harness plug from the black box (actuator) on the back side of the transfer case.

The chirping coming from the actuator started the second I put the vehicle in 4H. When I unplugged the harness the chirping became weaker and could only be heard around the passenger side fire wall.

Not a mechanic so this may not be very clear.

sorry to jack your thread

but i also have the same problem
i have 03 sr5 4x4 v6 currently 78k mile, this car never engage 4wd before.
i tried to engage in 4wd when i was on freeway goin bout 60mph from h2 to h4, but the the 4wd would just keep blinking and not engage.

Try slowing down first and then switching to 4WD.

Okay, gotcha. The chirping you're hearing is something inside the actuator/transfer case, or are you talking about an electronic chirping sound like a beep you'd normally hear from the dash?
