unless you're going to supercharge your 4runner......don't look for anything that'll make you nearly as fast as the s2000. welcome to the forum!
I would never expect an 4300lb truck to ever come close to a 2200lb car putting out 360hp. But I think the new 4runner VVTi V8 has potential to be fun. I am just upset that the ram air is not functional. I am hopeful that someone has done something to remedy that. In my eperience I have found that a true ram air shows much higher hp gains than an in ingine "cold air" intake.

In order to convert ot "ram air" you have to place intake on the top of the engine, which is dificult to do on a V- configured engine due to hood clearance problems. Subary WRX done it with a flat boxer type engine block. There was a post, where some one ran 4 tubes from scoop to side-draft intake, but inlet tubes are much too small and too long for marked increase in air flow (at least it looks that way). If there is TRD supercharger there I would definately open the scoop in order to keep blower cool.

There were photos somewhere of someone who had drilled big holes in the non-functional hood scoop of an older model 4R, and attached flex tubing to each of them and ran them to the airbox... will try to find the link...
The downside: When it rains/snows, not only will you induct air, you'll induct moisture too...
I haven't done this on my 4R since the stock system seems to draw air from the wheel well anyhow, but on other vehicles I've taken 2-3" dia. flex tubing and made a "poor man's ram air induction" by routing the open tube from the lower front air dam to the airbox or to where the stock airbox pulls in air in order to feed it cooler outside air at higher speeds. It seemed to make a small difference in performance, but that was probably offset by hitting the gas more often and consuming more fuel...

Do you think that just opening the scoop up and putting a screen on it will help cut down on engine temp or is the whole idea just not even worth doing? I know I am starting early on this since the new VVTi V-8 does not even come out until January...but I need something to make the time go by. 
Actually it is 2755 lbs stock I am probably down to about 2500 not 2200, with the lighter exhaust, wheels, intake, headers, no spare tire. But I think you got the point it is still a 40% lighter vehicle or almost the equivalent of a Lotus Elise.
But I am very excited about having two things I have been without for a while now....space and torque!
