Toyota considers the heat-sink provided by the engine oil filters external mounting to be an oil-cooler. In theory they have a point many would argue "it ain't a cooler until it looks like a mini radiator". I don't know how I feel about it.
The transmission has an "in-tank" cooler. They run lines to the radiator and have a heat exchanger contained in the radiator. Some with a V6 choose to add an extra cooler if they do a lot of towing, I did. Is it necessary? Probably not. Most would say it's a good idea. The only caution I would give is that if you live in a very cold area consider a thermostatic bypass. Months of operation with the transmission running too cold can allow contaminants to build up. I am talkin 30 days or more of 0F or if you just drive 5 miles a day or something like that. That's just a IMHO statement.
If you wheel a lot you may want to look for a transmission cooler with an electric fan of it's own. Aftermarket coolers don't get air pulled through by fan because they are outside of the effective area of the OE shrouding and tend to rely on airflow through the grille.
