05 v6 head gasket replacement

I have a 05 4.0 4wd that I need to do a head gaskets on. I just wanted to know if there are any unexpected quirks to this job before I disable my vehicle in the shop? Like are the head bolts an obscure socket like Triple square? I saw on all data that the axles need to be removed so I can drop the oil pan. Does the oil pan really have to be removed to get the timing cover off?

So after looking at some service literature it doesn't look like I have to drop the oil pan, I will just run the risk of oil pan leak if it don't don't seal it properly. Can anyone confirm this it? It would save me 6 hours of book time if I didn't drop the diff and upper oil pan.

I can't attest to the accuracy of this or not since I have a V8, but I have read several members here saying that you can remove the timing cover and reinstall it without dropping the oil pan but you have to be very careful getting the front seal between the pan and timing cover just right to insure that it doesn't leak.

I don't remember which topic it was but this was recently discussed within the last 2 weeks on the forum, it may have been a topic discussing when the timming chain should be replaced on the V6 or one of the topic discussing a future buy of a 4th Gen, I do remember that they were discussing the cost/quote of the chain replacement being rather high because of having to drop the pan.

Thanks for the reply I'll see if it can find the thread.

I found a thread detailing it, they say the oil pan doesn't have to be removed.

Speaking of head gasket. Does anyone have a link to a good write up that is as informative as possible on it? I have tried searching but haven't found too much. I am trying to decide if this is something I should dare even consider trying myself with very limited experience

This is the best I've seen. Read through the posts on this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?t=174451

I just finished, took me 13 hours. To answer my own questions no, the upper oil pan doesn't have to be dropped.also the cam sprockes do not have to be removed, it would make it easier to time it but not worth the effort. It really wasn't a bad job though

Edit. The bi hex tool I bought was a little too large and I had to hammer it in to seat into the bolts. I got tired of it and used a tripple square, it worked perfectly.
