05/V8 SportEdition Noob looking for some performance and other recommendations…

Hiya - Just got a 2005 V8 4 Runner and wanted to throw out the question on what mods / performance items you all would recommend…

I live in San Diego and hit the desert quite often to ride the MX bike and I also use it as a tow vehicle for my rally car (I co-drive a Group 2 rally car)

Here's a few things I would love some input on:

1: Performance upgrades - exhaust? Suspension?
2: HID kit - researching these has been mind boggling - what to get, what not to get… ugh.
3: Roof rack
4: Some type of storage system for rear cargo area (I dont have the two level set up…)
5: Audio upgrades - would love to keep the stock head-unit and stealth in a sub and amp - noticed the Limiteds have a sub in the rear - anyone know if the Sport Editions have the hole and wiring?

I got an HID kit from VLED's for $39 on sale. I've had it for about a month now and love it. Seems well built but hey what do I know?
 
Performance upgrades just depend on what you want to do. The stock air box actually flows very well, not much gain overall from switching to an aftermarket cold air intake. Some have noted improved throttle response, others not so much. Exhausts seem to be along the same lines, just depends on what you want, but without tuning to compensate for them I don't think the benefits are worth it.

You can go as big or as small as you want with suspension, really need to know your off road goals and budget before suggestions can be made.

HID kits-best bang for the buck is from www.ddmtuning.com. Around $40 and lifetime warranty. Get their kit at whatever color temp you prefer.

I'll have to do some searching to find specifics, but there's several who've built a custom cargo drawer system for the rear. Also, do a search for member J.A. In his sig you will see a link to his site and there's a great write up for it. Best thing about his is no cargo space is taken up.

Look on the head unit and if you see JBL listed anywhere. Also, in the rear cargo panel, you should see a grill for the sub if you've got it. If you do, take a look at the link in my sig for my audio install, it's a very nice stealth setup. If you don't have JBL we'll look at other options.
 
Thanks! DDM has two kits and a few add-ons (harness / adapter / error eliminators…) Do you need to get those as well?

2. DDM or Xenondepot
3. Baja or ARB
4. Have not reserached
5. I do not have the wiring (but I think you can make the hole)
 
Do not get a CAI like Volant. The hole in the airbox causes inconsistent flows across the MAF sensor. People on a 100 forum (same engine) have done complete AFR analysis and at full throttle the fuel delivery is very inconsistent

Yeah, I've heard about that. I just did a drop in K/N with stock air box...

On the DDM - I'm a bit confused on the bulbs I need as well as if I need the adapters and error correcting kits…
 
From what I've been told, on DDM you need only the kit. I don't believe any of the add ons such as the error code eliminator is needed.

Agreed

1) Suspension: Spacer lifts if your not doing serious offroading
Exhaust: I would avoid a full catback system, just drop in a muffler (flowmaster or borla)
2) DDM has great products, and good customer service.
3) Rola if on a budget, Gobi if you aren't
4) IDEA
5) Stealth Box

I would watch it if you are just throwing a muffler on, a lot of guys on here complain about drone. This seems to happen when putting too small or too large of a muffler on, so do a lot of research on it. There was a lot of talk with Magnaflow having a lot of drone but it is hard to ween out the full cat back system complaints vs having just the muffler. I have the catback, there is some drone but it is no different than any of the exhausts I have owned in the past whether it has been Borla, Flowmaster, or Magnaflow(all cat back systems).

For roof rack, I looked into all the different brands, some look a lot nicer than others. However I wanted a lot of function with mine also. I went with the Yakima Megawarrior, for a couple of reasons. 1. lifetime warranty 2. Yakima can be found everywhere and they are not going anywhere 3. there is an attachment made where I can mount shovels to Kayaks on it so anything I want to put up there I can.
