The red means low water. To check the level the use a flashlight and illuminate the backside of the battery as it's translucent. Jiggle the T4R with your knee on the front bumper to see the level of the juice.
Rather than me rambling on just look at these photos:biggrin2:
When you're done with job (battery all closed up again) rinse everything off with a little baking soda and water. It'll fizz a bit and get rid of any corrosive acid that may be lingering on the T4R.
No kidding... Wear safety glasses! The 'fumes' a battery emits are largely hydrogen so no smoking:biggrin2:

OK I don't even have that sticker on the top of my battery ..... hmmmmm.
That pretty much is a no brainer with that sticker...lol.
update---- I went out to do it and I just think the indicator is crappy , I looked at the level on the side and it's right where it's supposed to be . Don't know where the sticker went though.

It looks like screw caps... A big Phillipshead I think. I haven't actually opened mine yet, no need so far.
A little late to help you out perhaps, but every single person I've talked to doubts the reliability of those little indicators. For example, mine showed white "needs charging" for about a year before it finally died (lasted 5+ years in total), but in reality was fine. I know somebody else that showed red "add water" (it didn't need water), then promptly died within a few days. Who knows for sure?
One thing I would add. I swear by the anti-corrosion gel around the battery terminals. We used to have terrible corrosion on one vehicle in particular and years after I applied gel, the terminals were as pristine and clean as the day it was installed.

This is one very good reason that the world gives me a headache.
Physics is physics. The chemical process by which car batteries work generates hydrogen as a byproduct. And it also causes the electrolyte to evaporate
Granted, newer batteries use materials which reduce these actions, but to not eliminate it. So how the frak can they possibly claim "maintainence free" status?

Also, I don't know if it's just Panasonic, but rather Toyota's choice in OEM battery suppliers overall.
My 2000 Tacoma had her original battery in her in late 2008 when she met the crusher, and I never even had cause to think about it. Never even 1 time slow cranking, etc. And we do get winter here. I don't know what brand it was, however.

When a battery is brand new the percentage of sulfuric acid in the solution inside the battery has a certain specific gravity which used to be measured by sucking up some of the solution into a glass tube with a float inside and indicator lines on the side of the tube showing the specific gravity by the position of the float. Later they started to incorporate this device into the battery. The indicator you see on these batteries is showing the amount of sulfuric acid in the solution. Also if you take off the cell plugs and look inside the battery and see bare plates that portion of the cell is already no good. The idea is to keep the plates submerged in the solution.Falls said:
