'06 Sunroof Ticking Sound

Guys,

There's been a lot on this forum about the "infamous sunroof rattle" and I've heard of various fixes on that problem such as installing nylon washers and plastic tubing on the wind deflector bar running through the track.

I have a rattle coming from the sunroof, but it's more of a ticking sound than a rattle (ie, it doesn't sound like anything is coming loose, but it's a major freakin' annoyance).

Problem is, I'm not sure this is the same rattle that's already been discussed. Two questions:

1) Did Toyota change the design at some point to fix the "infamous sunroof rattle"? On my '06 sunroof, I can't seem to find the bar / track assembly in question that seems to be the culprit.

2) If not, then has anyone else with an '06 experienced the same ticking sound coming from the sunroof?

So far, the only fix I've heard about is to shut up and live with it (and that's hardly expert advice, coming from my girlfriend who drives a Jetta!)

It doesn't sound like Toyota has fixed the fundamental problem if the accounts on these boards are anything to go be.

Mine (2004) occasionally rattles, mainly on very course (not rough) road surfaces. Rather than a classic rattle is is more of a very frequent cliking noise, verging on a rattle but not quite there. It's directly above my head, usually when the sunroof's closed. Thumping the ceiling stops it for a few seconds, then it starts up again.

Luckily it's intermittent enough for me to be able to ignore it.

I just came home from a drive to Oakland and back and this sound just popped up for the first time in my 06. I am extremely upset about it because I figured this was the one common problem my 4th gen DOESN'T have. I have about 4200 miles on the truck so far and the first oil change service will also include my complaint regarding the clunking driveshaft, squeak coming from the rear passenger seat (I tried the electrical tape fix, but that only lasted for a little while), and now this sunroof rattle. It really pisses me off that I bought Toyota for the tight build quality, but these little things show up and annoy the heck out of me. So, yes, I can confirm your complaint and I share your pain. I love my truck still, but c'mon!

I too have started to experience this noise with about 2400 miles on my 06' v8 limited

Pushing up on the sunroof stops the noise, so i'm trying to figure out exactly where it's coming from. Sometimes i just reposition the sunroof either tilt or sliding it micrometers at a time until it finds a spot that it doesn't squeek and doesn't create wind noise either. Kind of a hassle, i'd like it to be gone completely.

Anyone solve this in the 06's ?

It's an issue with the stop limits when closing the sunroof. I had the problem on my '03 Sport. The dealer adjusted the stop limits and it went away.

The problem is that it has returned and I haven't had the chance to take it back in.

Rattle just started happening on my runner. Same thing, if I push the sunroof glass up, the rattle goes away. It happens when I go over bumps, but not all the time. I figure I'll wait until it's more consistent before I take it in. I am out of bumper to bumper, but I did purchase the platinum plan for these type of issues.

Call me crazy but this is the precise reason I got a sport edition WITHOUT a sun/moon roof.....all the cars I have had with a sun roof all had roofhad problems at one time or the other...leaks,rattles,stuck 1/2 way open/closed, high pitched wind noise......... I realize that doesn't fix your problem but I thought I'd just throw in my opinion.

Okay, I think I narrowed it down to one of the springs that are used on the wind deflector. I used some WD40 and the noise is gone...for now. I'll tell you, ever since my 89 and 94 Supra turbos, which both had Targa tops, a sunroof is mandatory. Nothing like opening it up on a nice day. I will say that the sunroof on my wife's 2008 EX Accord is light years ahead of the 4runner. It just feels so solid.
