'06 Tubular Running Board Strength

Does anyone know how strong the newer tubular running boards they have on the 2006 and up Sport Editions are? Are they just for show? Can they support the weight of the vehicle?

I don't think they can support the weight of the car, they aren't rock sliders so they'll probably bend....

They will not hold the weight of the vehicle. If you think you may be offroading in conditions that may damage them, you might want to consider rock sliders, because the tube steps can do quite a bit of damage if they get bent.

If you take them off you will notice they are hollow and only weigh 10-15 lbs each. Something like that can't hold the weight of a 4500lb truck.

I thought they were mounted to the frame? At least on the 06+ SE

The tube stops on the SE are mounted to the frame, just like the running boards on the SR5 and Limited. Neither of which will support the weight of the rig. Sliders, either welded or bolted on, are needed to server as rocker panel protection and a lift point.

If you are serious about off roading, lose them.

It was my first "mod" and in my opinion makes your 4Runner look a lot better.

Mine specifically said she NEEDS them to get in. She is only about 5'3". I don't think I have seen her get in without standing on them. I told her I could just get her one of those doggy steps that some people use so their pets can get onto the bed or couch. :biggrin2:
