06 V8 K&N intake!!

Does the Volant still have the fitment issue? Or wrong parts (such as filter... etc) with the package?
Not sure if they've completely fixed that or not. When I informed them that they had sent me the wrong filter, they shipped the right one out pretty quick, no charge obviously...

The part # for the new 05-06 V8 K&N intake is 63-9029. You can see it on the K&N website under new releases. That is the 63 series I believe but mine is the 77 series which is the chrome one. Ive had it on now for over two months with not one problem. Ive heard from a number of people that the volant kit is not a quality kit as far as installing the kit.

I thought I'd spoil myself on my birthday so I bought the 63 series kit for my '05 V8. Should be here in less than a week! I'll post some pics once it's installed.

Got my kit in the mail today but I wont have time to mess with it for a few days, but as soon as I do I'll post pics and a video if I can.

Not trying to start a war here, but I noticed some folks comparing the statistics of K&N and Volant. Just FYI, but the 12 HP K&N lists is at the wheel, not at the crank. They included a copy of a dyno done on an '06 with the kit and added a note saying it was indeed the wheel hp.

I realize volant boasts 17 hp over K&N's 12, but I decided to go with the K&N because my brother, my father, and I have been using K&N products for about 8 years now and have never had one problem. I understand a bunch of people in the forum have had no problems and are happy with their volant, but I guess the amount of problems and issues Ive read made me go with the "if it aint broke, dont fix it" mentality.

It's going to be a bit longer on the install. There was a problem with the directions that K&N must not have noticed when finalizing them. They listed a certain silicon hose on the parts list, but a different hose on the actual installation directions and guess what...I have the part that doesnt fit.

They are overnighting it to me right now.

Looks like no brand of intake comes perfect anymore...haha.

sweeeet

ok, The kit is on and its gooood.

Im just going to write as much as I can because I know big posts like this are helpful to me when I'm interested in purchasing something.

For those of you who are interested in getting the kit. The 63 series has the black plastic tube and gains 12 HP at the wheel and the 77 series as the stainless tube and gains 7 HP at the wheel. This is probably because the metal intake on the 77 will heat up more than the plastic counterpart and thus not get as much of a benefit. It probably costs more too.

As far as improvements, first of all the sound is incredible. I had an FIPK on my 3.0 '95 and loved it, but on this 4.7 it sounds mean. I've only had it on for about 4 hours now so as far as gas mileage I can't say yet. Im sure it will help my mileage once I stop stomping on the pedal to hear it. According to the dyno K&N included, most of the hp gains occur above 4k rpm. I gunned it up there a couple times it felt good.

I wouldnt be surprised if I was one of the first to get the kit from K&N because there was an issue with the install. Between the parts list and the installation instructions they listed two different hoses that connect the intake to the engine. The part you want is the one on the installation instructions (#08690). The guy I spoke with at K&N said he was making a note so maybe they'll change the instructions. Other than that, the kit went on without a hitch. Everything fits snug.

Anyways, moral of the story, check the parts list to make sure you have everything...and ask them to overnight missing parts (they were about to ground ship me the part they forgot to include).

Now I know Volant's kit gains 17 hp vs this one's 12, so it's a matter of preference there. If volant has smoothed out the issues Ive read about, then it may be better deal. Like I said earlier I decided to go with K&N because Ive had their stuff before and they have a reputation. K&N has a lifetime warranty and re-usable filter (not sure what volant has here). The K&N is an open element whereas the volant is closed, so this makes a difference in air temperature and perhaps how much dirt/dust it comes in contact with. Not sure how much the volant is, but my kit with shipping and tax was 330. Well, now you got the facts, so the rest is up to you.

I'll post more after a while to let yall know of any issues, mpg, etc, etc.

After - 4. That hose underneath the clamps is the hose I was referring to. I'd be glad to answer any other questions about the kit. I hope this all was helpful.

p.s. I took a video, but im not sure how to post it for yall to see. If you've ever seen a new intake on a car before then you can probably imagine what it sounds like

To give yall a little information on performance after a little driving.

When it was first on I gunned it a lot because I was excited about the kit and as a result got poor gas mileage (about 4 mpg less)

I drove it normal in the city and avoided gunning it and saw about a 1-2 mpg increase over normal city driving.

I just took a roadtrip from ATL to the north GA mountains and North Carolina. Except for a little mountain driving, I was on the highway the whole time and I got about 1 or 2 mpg increase over my normal highway mpg.

So bottom line, drive it normal and it helps, gun it a lot and you will be buying a lot more gas. After seeing how it performs I am glad I bought it. This is just my personal opinion, but if I didnt see any gains in hp or mileage, Id still keep it just for the sound.

Hey Deaner9505,

My friend installed this unit on his Jeep and it sits about 8-10 inches forward from the looks of where it is located in the 4R. When you look straight down from overhead you can see straight down to the ground. So the one gripe from Jeep owners that I heard was that if you go through a big puddle or something it is a clear shot to the filter for water.

But from the looks of where your's is installed the wheel well or something will protect the filter from below. Can you verify this that there is something below the Air filter, frame wise keeping a straight shot of water from hitting the filter. I tried to look under the existing Air Filter box but it is hard to get a clear picture under there.

Thanks.....

I'm sure you would not have to worry about this issue with the 4runner kit. If you look at the "After-1" picture I posted you can kind of see that the kit sits right over the fender well with no straight shots to the ground. In addition the heat shield forms a sort of "box" with the hood and fender well to enclose the filter.

I'm not sure of how extreme the water riding you're thinking about doing is, but I'd say you'd be in good shape.

Hey Jason,

Do the kits you have for K&N have the correct part number included that Deaner talked about. He said the parts list was different compared to the Part number in the directions. Not sure if you have these stocked, or you order them up, but I just want to make sure I do not have to get a part overnighted like Deaner did.

Thanks....
