'07 Sport V8 Drivetrain noise

Okay, so I bought my 4R in January last year and shortly after I bought it I took it up north for a ski weekend. On the trip I noticed a pulsing noise when going 70+ mph while under power. To me it sounds like it's a transfer case or transmission related but I am not certain. I took it to the dealer immediately for diagnosis and while they acknowledged the noise, they weren't sure what it was. The Tech said he'd contact Toyota to see if they knew anything. No answers and very poor follow through. Fast forward to 15,000 miles and the problem is still there. 4Hi and 4Lo both function normally but I'm starting to get pissed. My wife normally drives it during the week since she only goes 4 miles and has heated parking so it's been out of sight out of mind for me. The tech also told me that Toyota has seen this on about 15 other vehicles and yet they don't have an answer.

It's due for an oil change so I'm going to put more pressure on the dealer for answers and resolution when I have it in there. Anybody else have this problem or have any advice?

Both. It's most noticeable at 70+mph when you are slightly on the throttle such as into a headwind or a gentle incline. Now that I have heard it so much I can hear it at different speeds and can feel it in the gas pedal as well. Most passengers don't even hear it until I point it out. Sounds like a ring or pinion gear that was machined out of spec, but I can be sure.
 
Welcome to the dreaded harmonic drone club...HDC. There are a lot of posts that describe it as different sounds or feelings but in essence it is an harmonic drone produced around 70 mph that is heard and felt while under power. Take your foot off the gas and it goes away, apply power and it comes back. Mine gets worse in the winter. I have taken my 4R to the dealership and in short, without a TSB we are screwed. Sooo, call Toyota Customer Service, log a complaint pointing out that Lexus has addressed this with a TSB, and deal with the drone by turning up the stereo a bit. If enough owners call and complain, they will eventually follow through with a TSB. Here is the number:

Oh great, that doesn't sound like a club I want to be in. Obviously Lexus has identified the source of the problem and know what the fix is. It's ridiculous to think that it's something that Toyota wouldn't fix under warranty but I'd almost pay to have it fixed myself.

My wife and I have pretty good documentation of the problems and we were considering hiring a lawyer to try and get a lemon buy back. If my dealer really doesn't know what is causing it, it seems like you could pitch it as a potential safety issue.

Thoughts? Anyone else tried to go that route?
 
drivetrain noise

My 06 sport v8 does'nt have the drone but i have a whine niose be tween 60 and 80 mph with slight throttle applied more throttle niose goes away no throttle no niose.
 
I'm coming up on 5,000 miles on my 07 sport V8, but haven't had it happen to me yet. About what mileage did the noise start becoming noticeable?
 
Right away, I had it two weeks and took it on a trip and that is when I noticed it. If you haven't heard it yet you are probably in the clear.

Mud, sounds like the same issue but a slightly different noise?
 
So, I called the Toyota customer satisfaction center and they started a case file on my vehicle. They ultimately called me back and told me the noise was normal. I respectfully disagreed and told them that if I was fine with a noisy vehicle I would have bought and American SUV and saved myself a good chunk of change. To make a long story short, they are sending me the paperwork to file for arbitration. Once we send that in, an arbitrator will contact me and hopefully want to come out and inspect the vehicle personally. We've tried the requisite 4 times to get it services, so a lemon buy back shouldn't be outside the realm of possibility. We will see and I will keep you posted.

YES WE HAVE COME TO EXPECT QUALITY FROM OUR RUNNERS,THAT IS WHY WE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE HARMONIC DRONE AND THE "DREADED DRIVESHAFT CLUNK"!PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS.WHEN WE PURCHASED THESE 4RUNNERS WE DIDN'T EXPECT TO HAVE ONGOING PROBLEMS.WE LOVE OUR RUNNERS,SO FIX THESE PROBLEMS SO WE CONTINUE TO BUY FROM TOYOTA.

Case Progress

Ok, so it seems when I requested the paperwork for arbitration it lit a fire under someones butt. Now I've had new attempts from the dealer to try and solve my problem. There is going to be a Regional Rep from Toyota at the dealer next Wednesday and he wants to meet with me to inspect and drive my vehicle. I am still going to fill out the arbitration paperwork to see where it goes. It's free to any Toyota owner and the decision is only binding for Toyota, I can choose to excercise the decision or pursue further action as I see fit. Why the hell not right?

Sweet,do it.Maybe this will get something done for you and spill over to us all.I have 25000 miles on my 06 v8 sport but i may also file.I am sck of the driveshaft clunk,the dealer(Conicelli) barely knowS ANYTHING ABOUT IT.tHEY ARE SUPPOSED TO LUBE THE DRIVESHAFT WITH EVERY OIL CHANGE,BUT WHEN I LEAVE,CLUNK,CLUNK,CLUNK. THANKS,GOOD LUCK
 
Pulsing Noise

I too have experienced a pulsing (almost a wheer wheer wheer) coming from the front of my 2007 V8 Sport 4-Runner at highway speeds. Definately more noticable at 65 mph+ but I can feel it through the gas pedal at 50.
This started at my 10k oil change and rotation. The dealer told me that it was "cupping" on the tires. At 15k I took it back for another oil change and rotation. Noise was still there.
I had a service rep go for a drive to show him the noise. He agreed and ordered and replaced the right front bearing. Nice try but the noise seems to be coming from the left front. At 20K had the tires rotated again and had the left front bearing replaced. Still have the noise.
One thing that I have noticed is that it seems to be quieter as the weather gets warmer. Maybe it's because my windows are open.
This sucks! Anyone have a solution. I have sent letters/emails and made phone calls. I'm getting sick of driving crappy loaner vehicles!

Welcome to my world. Except I had the noise since about two weeks of ownership. Toyota is not doing anything for me and I've given up with my dealership. I still love my truck, but it pisses me off that they don't make changes to the design to alleviate this problem. They acted surprised when I said the noise bothered me.
 
Do you all notice this at all times or could it be only when the AC compressor/defroster is running? I've noticed my truck just acts odd whenever the compressor is running.
