07 V6: Water pump questions

I have an 07 4Runner, V6 - 74k miles. Coolant level in the overflow tank is slowly dropping. I suspect the water pump is going. I'll probably replace it myself and was wondering if anyone has any advice on this repair. I am considering replacing the pump, upper and lower coolant hoses, thermostat, drive belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys. Clearly I could go the cheapest route and just replace the pump. Are the other items likely to go relatively soon at 74k miles or should I save my money? If you've had any of these items fail on a v6 4runner, what was the mileage? Also, are you all using the Toyota "super long life" red coolant to refill after replacing the water pump?

I think the pumps tend to last longer than 74k in many cases, though the radiators do tend to leak around the tank end on the drivers side. Pop up the plastic pins and the cover over the radiator and take a good look with a light, between the rad and condenser. You may see pink/white residue.

Just a thought.

Otherwise the parts you noted seen to be good items to replace and prolly fit the mileage for wear.

I just saw an '03 V6 with a leaking radiator as well in the bottom passenger corner.

Also the Toyota SLLC is not red, it is pink; the Toyota LLC coolant is red and is not compatible in a Toyota SLLC vehicle.

Water pumps aren't too bad on these V6's and it isn't very common for them to leak this early, but they do "weep" by Toyota's standards (or leak as most of us regard it.)

If you do not have engine ligths you better look for leaks first. I had same issue last year and after search around the cooling system several times i found small pink spot on my radiator. I took it off and Local radiator shop fixed the small leak, installed back with no issues.

I would have to agree with the above. I just replaced my water pump as preventive maintenance while replacing my leaking radiator. I must say that even at 156,000 miles the water pump looked brand new.

But if it is the water pump then this link should help you replace it. It's not that hard.

It's from tacoma world, but it's the same engine as our V6.

I didn't get around to fixing this yet. My overflow tank is still dropping very slowly. I pulled back the fan shroud, as suggested. That was a great guess - my radiator IS leaking. There are multiple small areas where coolant has leaked from what must be pinholes and is hardening into a crystalized coolant sculpture. These are on the driver's side near the top of the radiator, right next to the plastic tank. They're not visible without partially removing the fan shroud. I have a new radiator and hoses to install tonight. Thanks for the suggestion to look there!

Yup, I got the job done last night. I also replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses and the serpentine belt while I was at it. She's as good as new.
