07 v8 timing belt / water pump replacement

So I found a dealership that will replace the timing belt on my 07 v8 for $370 including parts and labor. I asked how much more to also replace the water pump. They said an additional $800. I laughed.

But I just want to confirm first that $800 for the water pump is outrageous since the labor to remove the timing belt is already covered. And second, how often does the water pump go out on these trucks? Should it be okay if I don't replace it now?

If I can get them to replace the water pump, what would be a reasonable price? It looks like I could get the part for around $120. Do y'all think $600 for timing belt and water pump replacement would be a good price?

Hmm. I hadn't heard of the serpentine belt needing replacement like the timing belt does. They're supposed to call with an estimate for water pump. I'll ask about serp belt then. I've also heard that the pulleys don't necessarily need to be replaced - only if they're worn or damaged somehow.

good luck haggling with a dealership... or any shop for that matter. they go off of flat rate. its gonna cost what its gonna cost. you start trying to talk them down and your just gonna cut into the quality of work cause they are gonna rush the tech and tell him to cut corners to save time.

-also when you ask for a quote on a job and come back with, "oh yeah and this... oh and this..." it only makes you look like an idiot and not know a thing at all, thus giving the service writer the idea that he can stiff you.

a timing belt should be done with a water pump and vice versa, along with a new thermostat and serpentine belt at minimum. and that should cost around $1000, if you can get it for $800 then good for you, you got a good deal, anything less than that, and id start to worry about corners cut and inferior parts or "zero fricks given" about the job

I spent about $1000 with a shop for Pump, timing belt, serpentine belt. Got genuine parts from dealer though.

Just got mine done yesterday. $1181 out the door and it included the Water pump, Timing Belt, serpentine belt, pulley, and transmission flush. No Dealer though. I was quoted $1000 from the dealer w/o the belt, pulley, or flush

In my experience with any shop/dealer, the just look up the job hours and parts and that's that.

Example, we have vehicle that has a aux battery integrated into the alarm up under the fender well. It is common for the integrated battery to go bad and leak all over the circuit board. Since it is integrated into the main, it drains the battery over time. I already know/diagnosed this, and wanted to save time/hastle if they could do it at a reasonable price.

I checked a local shop, they quoted me an hour for "diagnostics" for a problem I am aware of. They want to change my main battery, $150 for the battery, + another 30 min of labor. The alarm board $120 for genuine, they quoted $150. They quoted another 2 hours for labor for the alarm board.

To total that up, well over $500 for $120 part and what would take me 45 min. Even when I told them just the alarm board nothing else, still $350. Their computer says 2 hours, they charge 2 hours even if they can do it in 15 minutes. I have learned it is just best to do as much as I can myself, google/youtube is your friend.

The water pump would probably take them a few extra minutes to do in addition to the timing belt. $375 for a timing belt is the lowest quote I have ever heard by far. Maybe they realized it after the fact and tried to compensate for the initial quote by tacking on another $800. Or maybe they anticipated you would be back when the water fails and they can nail you then.

aeb, I think you're right. They did mention a timing belt "coupon" when I dropped the truck off and said they'd call and let me know if the water pump and/or other parts should be replaced. That's probably where they're planning to get me. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Local toyota shop says they have a timing belt special 'coupon' for 200 dollars on the site. With the amount of negative reviews on yelp. and how they screwed my uncles car, I'd be skeptical on low priced stealership services as well... They can easily say "Oh by the way you change this this and this" I guess this is just how toyota dealerships work in NYC...
