10 mpg

I have 96 4runner SR5 with 118,000 and this winter it seams to be getting 10mpg, why yoh think so low? Did have fuel system cleaned few years ago and been using addtive to keep everything clean. Oil and filters have been done including air, new tires with about 10k+- just rotationed. Plugs and wires changed around 100k npk stuff bought myself so they would be right ones installed by Meineke.

is it lifted? what size tires are on it? does it have any heavy aftermarket upgrades i.e. bumpers winches and such? if its bone stock i would look into the fuel system and filters.
 
It seems like its hit or miss with these trucks - I have heard everything from 8-25mpg, that is why I'm hesitant to lift mine or get bigger wheels/tires since I'm avg nearly 22mpg's. you might have to clean your MAF - some guys have bad good luck with Seafoam I also use Lucas gas treatment on every other fill up. I'm running stock rims and Michelin XLT's.
 
10mpg? wow.. that's not bad... seriously...I just picked up my first 4runner, a 2000 limited with 119,000 miles on it... Ive wanted a 3rd gen 4 runner for a long time...so looked around and found this one in excellent condition. completely stock on 145x75r16's. On the 120 mile drive home I got 12 mpg...but i thought, ok, it's -20 F and a head wind so that must be it.. I've only driven it to work and back now for the last week and have put on about 18 miles... my gas gauge is almost to the 1/2 full mark... I dont even dare compute that. granted, we havent had a day above 0 degrees F all week but jeez... this is crazy. Im wondering if i made a big mistake now.
 
Cold weather = poor mpg's! When was the last time you replaced your upstream sensor? Might want to think about doing that pretty soon. Change your fuel filter while you're at it too.

I hope you mean 245/75R16. Also your more recent low mileage is likely a result of how rich the engine runs coming upto temperature combined with short stop and start distances. However even with that your mileage figures are absolutely absurd, something is wrong or out of place.
 
yes...my bad 245's.... sorry, not to hijack this thread but perhaps we have some of the same issues... I just found some other suggestions elsewhere in this site (beginners guide to 4runners) that address the mpg issues and will look at all of them because I really want to keep this 4runner and eventually do some slight mods to it... but one thing Ive been wondering about... i do hear a whine upon acceleration and a decrease in the whine while decelerating... is that how 4runners generally sound? almost thought I was in 4wd at first but Im not...
 
'01 SR5, ScanGauge ll reads 21mpg average on level highway... new fuel filter, fore O2 sensor, intake and MAS cleaned at 163,xxx, running 265/16 MTR's
 
Im definately going to look into all these components and clean, replace as needed etc etc..thanks for the info...by the way, my one and only time in Colorado was this summer for 4 days and made Idaho Springs one of the destinations... :)

Is this the right O2 sensor or is there better?

All stock parts. Bridgestone Dulers P235/75R15, Firestone replaced fuel filter when did fuel system cleaning, think :reddance:. Timming belt last done around 60k but has quick pickup. This is driving around long island, stop and go no long runs. :lookout:

I don't think you can calculate any estimate of mpg unless you run more than one full tank and each time you drive it should be long enough for the engine to warm up, at least 5 mins.

Intresting, long time ago when the real axel seals were replaced Meineke said one side the parking break mechanics rusted and get stuck. You can tell when this happens because the cable sticks up in the console near the break lever. I never use it and he showed me where it was on the wheel and how to release it if stuck closed. My sister never asked Firestone if it was ok last week when oil & rear skid plate was replaced :wacko:. I been stuck in bed since Oct so can't check along with all the snow :shocked:. Maybe I'll have her take it back with a list of things to check :photo:. If the O2 sensor was bad would it not set off engine light :loco:
 
Try switching to CASTROL GTX motor oil. I've been using Valvoline synthetic blend oil in my car for the past 4 years and the most recent oil change I used Castrol GTX (conventional and synthetic mix). I see a big improvement in the engine in smoothness and gas mileage. I am going to try that same oil in my 4runner which is doing 16 - 17 MPG on highway with valvoline.
 
When the O2 sensors went in mine, yes the CE light came on. The downstream didnt affect the mileage to much, got 16-18mpg. When the upstream went bad, got the kind of mileage you are talking about. Got replacement Denso ones from Rockauto for about $45.00.

Wouldn't a diagnosis of the engine report this? Can't see why the computer wouldn't see off a bell that they were failing, my sisters camry needed the one under the car replaced. People next door run their sprinkler every day and it's taking the paint. Firestone asked if it was in a flood cause they think water damage killer the sensor:faint:
