10k too expensive for 140k, 4wd, elocker, limited?

It all really depends what you want from this rig
Hi, new member here just giving my 2 cents. It really depends what you want, I just purchased a 2001 4runner SR5 4wd w/140K for 5000.00 after waiting a couple months constantly checking CL, facebook marketplace, and Offerup.
$10000 is the average going price for a very clean, one owner, 99-2000 Limited 4runner with low miles usually under 100k, the multi mode 4wd system and with no issues.
Saw one go for 15k on Bringatrailer.com with similar mileage options etc
If it was me, if carfax and the toyota inspection were clean, I would buy it.

My thoughts.
-Dealers are selling higher than private party hands down. They are just able to sit on the vehicle and sell it to someone that is willing. So if you want to save money find a private party and if you have time to wait you can find a gem.
- A vehicle is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, and if this is one you want then it is worth it (to you) but definitely not the bank.
No matter what mileage 140 k, 270 k you will have to put money into the maintenance. No matter how good they maintained it. I'm sure they didn't replace the ball joints as a caution, Rear axle seals are not a part of preventative maint, they just fail. Same goes for steering rack ext...
Yes Toyota's sell for higher than KBB that is called demand based pricing. People will pay for it so that is how much it is worth.
Also look outside of your area sometimes certain areas are really high. IE San Diego is super high, but I went up to LA and found many many more options for less.

Curious as to if these prices will hold steady or get higher. Will be looking to sell my runner in the next year. 1999 limited with locker and a ton of preventative maint and mods with service records all the way back to the day it left the lot.

I looked for 7 months (2012-2013) and got a 97/4WD/Locker/5-speed with 120K in really nice condition for $8K here in So. Cal. It still needed new tires, shocks, springs, radiator, hoses, belts, ball joints and every fluid changed, and a couple of surprise repairs(rear axle seals, throttle body replacement).

10k? Hell no. I wouldn't pay anywhere near that for any vehicle this old. I got mine for 4500 and it was rust free and a Limited.....in the rust belt with 151k miles.

New member here. I was in the same boat. Until a week ago, when I bought this 96’ last weekend. Had to fly from CA to Tulsa OK to get it, but that was kind of fun. She’s in excellent condition. I kept an ebay and a CL alert going for a few months, many close candidates. But so glad i was patient. Bought this one sight unseen, after talking to the seller over the phone. Records dating back to the original purchase, including timing belt at 75k. I bought it for south of $8000 and drove it 1500 miles the next day problem free.

I feel lucky to have found it but when I did I jumped on it. Had I not thrown the deposit down over the phone with the seller, it would have been gone by the time the phone hung up. Moral of the story, 10k may not be bad, but you can do better.

I really think you need to just look around some more and be prepared to wait a few months for something to pop up.
With third gens the thing is there are like a million of them. Really they are sooooo common. The downside is there are a lot of a-hole wannabe dealers asking way over bluebook just hoping a member of T4R calls them. But for every several of those guys there are honest private sellers who just need to get rid of their old truck. Most 4WD 3rd Gens are not built in any way and it really should be possible to find a decent used one that is 4WD if you are patient.
It's kind of crazy to me that people are asking this much. Sucks for new folks who are fans.

Like the plague. Especially since your in CA. You should be able to get a rust free rig that's been in Cali it's whole life. The photo's of the undercarriage show some very liberal use of spray paint to cover up the rust. Also that "new heavy rear differential cover" is because the axle housing rusted through. Stay away.
If your serious about getting one start looking at Reno and places in AZ. Both areas area also rust free zone and the prices are a lot cheaper. A plane ticket and a drive back would easily be worth it for the right vehicle from the right owner.

It's probably worth a look. Only a close in person inspection can tell you if the rust is beyond consideration. Give the photo of the under carriage, I bet it opened the door for a lower price though...

I paid a stoopid price for my garage queen low- mile 02 Sport Edition. No rust...underside looks new. CA car. Drives like new.
I figured...I could wait for months and months and look around. But it was for sale and the guy's phone was blowing up with calls within an hour of the c-list ad. Color I wanted. Year and model I wanted.
So I shut that sh*t down by offering more than he was asking. Paid for it cash an hour later.
I got exactly the one I wanted. If I drive it five years and take a $5k hit...still a cheap ride. $83 a month.
If you really want the car...just pay what they're asking.

This is sage advice. Good cars, good trucks and good motos are worth the $ from honest sellers. If you find a good value, honor the seller with an honest offer or match of their asking price.

10K for a weekend camping rig? A bit high, yes. I would look for something about half that price. You don't need locker/limited. Seats are personal preference but for me I'd avoid the leather.

the seller has had this on the market for a while. Way overpriced in SoCal for a rusty frame truck. I wouldn't touch it. Fixing rust properly is not cheap
