10k too expensive for 140k, 4wd, elocker, limited?

You can get 2wd and beat 4x4 really cheap in Los Angeles area, Some small local dealer has been buying up all the clean 4x4's and cleaning them up and trying to get 10k - 14k for them. I looked for mine for months and ended up flying up to Portland. 2000 V6 SR5 Sport with 5 speed zero rust on the frame. Really good shape. The guy was asking 8.5K I got it for 6.5k Still $2k over blue book.

I agree there are a ton of these out there. Just not a lot of really clean body/interior and rust free 4x4's.

Things to note: condition of tires, interior cleanliness, condition of seats, does everything work including antenna, any rust spots on body (looks good), we here are really interested in underside pics showing extent of rust but the average buyer probably doesn't give it a second look.

Overall maybe ask for 9 and accept lower?

The running boards make it a little harder to take umderside pics but show the frame around where the rear lower control arm attaches, plus rear axle from behind, and general shot looking backwards from the front. If you have rust then these photos arent going to help the sale... but yours looks nice from that one photo

Specs -
140k
E Locker
4WD
Bone stock, still has running boards
Always garaged, paint is nearly perfect, no oxidation, still glossy
Limited, reupholstered leather seats
Clean title, no accidents
Sunroof
New tires
Timing belt done
Driven the last 13 years by an older woman
Will be inspected by Toyota dealer tomorrow

I used to have a runner, but it was 2wd, and I'm now looking to get one of these again as my weekend/camping car. I have been looking for ages, and I understand 10k is a bit much, but not sure a nearly perfect condition garaged 4Runner (with elocker & 4WD!) will come around again. Not too excited on dropping 10k on an older car, but I do have the cash for it, and my only other option for a 4wd that I like is a newer tacoma or 4runner and those are at LEAST mid 20s, which i do NOT have the money for because this will be a second car. I don't really see many other options honestly. Thoughts?

Having just sold my 2000 2WD Limited with 145K on it I can tell you $10K is not out of line for the right truck.

Hi Alex. I'm also a newb but I think I have a good (or possibly biased) perspective - full disclosure I'm in Seattle looking for a 3rd gen!

I think your $7.5k estimate is more realistic if you want is sold soon. Looking at craigslist, just in Seattle there are 5 right now under 200k and under $7k. Lots of ~5k examples, albeit higher miles. Yours may be the best of that lot, but as a buyer I feel like I'm rolling the dice no matter what, so silly things like trim and color may ultimately be the difference.

Most people buying a 20 year old truck are going to assume they will throw money into it after purchase. We'd all like a clean rust free vehicle, and most are going to be patient- you can get basic transportation or even a beater truck for a lot less.

It's true some people pay big bucks for these- but you are going to have to be patient. Dealers know that there is a cult following on these and willing to sit on their car until their perfect buyer comes along- but for the average seller competing on craigslist against people who figure 200k is time to sell the old reliable truck and look at the book value it's going to be tougher to move.

A clean 1 owner low miles in great shape does not come along often, but I'd be surprised if you got 10k for it without stepping up the marketing effort and waiting a long time. Your is one of the more expensive 3rd gens on Seattle craigslist now, but I think that's a good place for you. As far as your ad, I'd make clear the radiator is new, not just the hoses, and put some pictures of the underside hopefully showing no rust. Put the VIN so people can carfax and look up the service records, and talk that part up - all service done on time etc. You are competing with a $5k example I could do the timing belt/radiator/brakes/ and still come out ahead and do it with the parts I choose. And what is with the +tax? Are you going to make the seller pay extra tax to you? Sound odd to me. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I sold it yesterday, thanks to some discussion on the board here before I actually listed it here.

I also listed it on nextdoor.com, facebook, and craigslist. Nothing from nextdoor, facebook was listed at $8.5K and I had 1 inquiry. I received craiglist 5 inquiries in the first 5 minutes. Since the buyer hadn't made a decision after looking at it in the morning, I told the first guy from craigslist that he should come look at it. He said he had cash in hand and was going to drive from Tacoma. I immediately had to call him back since the buyer made his decision and sent me a paypal deposit. I've received many more offers some offering more money sight unseen.

Apparently I listed it at the right price for a quick sale. I want the new owner to feel good about it and enjoy the car as much as I did. While it might have been nice to get a bit more I don't feel bad about that either.

I was confused about tax - I thought I had to pay it!

They are getting more expensive as time goes by, ironically. I do think $10k is too expensive though.

For reference I bought my 98 4Runner Limited w/ 4WD, E-locker, and only 133,000 miles on it last year for $7,300 so it is possible to get them cheaper. I bought it in the Bay Area too which is perhaps the most expensive place to buy anything.

It took me about 4 months to find it so it just depends how long you're willing to wait. My best rec is to set up craigslist alerts so that you don't have to torture yourself by checking the site everyday. You can set it up so it only alerts you when new posts go up for the mileage and price you're looking for. It also helps because then you're the first to person to message the seller as soon as they post it.

Overall though I don't think high mileage is a deal breaker with 4Runners. Getting one at 180k is just as good as getting one at 130k imo.

This morning I was getting everything ready for the buyer. When I put the rocket box on top, covered with all of my old sailboarding decals I got very nostalgic.

I really really wanted to pack up a bunch of gear, drive to Hood River, and catch some wind.

So ive been lurking on here for sometime now and have been lurking socal craigslist for several months. I finally pulled the trigger on a 97 limited e-locked for $4,400. 1 owner with 300,000 and has been garaged since it was baught at the lot as the body and paint is in excellent condition with everything working and no big mechanical issues. on its 3rd timing belt, changed 20,000 mile ago. Ive seen all the posts of the ones for 8k-10k range and i refused to entertain the ads. took a lot of patients but it finally paid off. Owner did not post it as a 4x4 nor he knew what the e-locker was.

I didn't think 2001 came with a diff lock. I dont see the switch in the dash. Maybe he's referring to a center diff lock which is nothing special.

What's with the forward pointing antenna?

Nice truck due to its cleanliness but in terms of options, pretty run of the mill.

01-02's are center diff lock only. You often see sellers highlighting them as a bonus, but every 4wd has one. Technically they aren't wrong I guess unless they specifically say that it has a rear locking differential.

I think so. A lot of 90s cars are starting to become rare, and those of us who grew up in the 90s are lusting after the cars of our teenage years. You are starting to see things like clean RX7s, Tacomas, 4Runners, 300ZXs, E36 M3s, etc all getting rarer in clean condition and starting to creep up in value.
