10mpg bad gas consumption on 04, V8 4runner

Sore topic I know.... but getting very low millage just about 10mpg about 270miles for 23galllons tank.

04 4runner 70k V8 ....but it used with 60k 6mnts ago.

2mnts ago had the sulfur issue taking care of.

Replaced the spark plugs 2weeks ago, even though they didn't need to be replaced until 100k with NGK Iridium IX Plug; BKR6EIX-11

I make sure my tires at 35-36psi

Cleaned the MAF sensor( is this okay to do for this model??)

Cleaned the PVC valve

50% city 50 % hwy ...drive like a grandma most of the time, trying to save on gas.

Use 87 octane 10% eth. gas type I use normally.

My comp. reading 15-16mpg use which makes no sense to me..something is not right...after I fill the tank comp. starts off at 21 or 22 than drops down to 15 - 16 by time half tank. Never really cared to pay attention to from what i've read on this site its usually 2-3mpg off, but I thought I mention it.

Stop by at advanced auto parts to get a reading for bad code but they suggested that because I don't have a check engine light, they'll not get any reading/codes....don't know if this is true or not, or the sales person was being lazy.

Today I got my diffs and tranfer case fluids changed, I am planning on getting transmission fluid , tires swapped around as well this week.....

Any suggestions, much appreciated...out of ideas at this point.

I'm not sure how you're figuring 10mpg when this alone suggest you at the very least getting 270/23 = 11.73mpg. And since I doubt you ever run your tank completely dry, let's figure you really only use 19 gallons per tank which gives you 14.21mpg.

I will agree that 270 miles on a tank is not the greatest especially if you are driving very gingerly. Somewhere closer to 300mpg is about what I would expect.

Also, sounds like you've touched on almost all things that would affect gas mileage. I suspect the 10% eth blend is what is really responsible in your lower overall mpg.

Another item to change which would give you a great boost is the primary O2 sensors. They tend to work slower towards the end of their usable lives and can lead to lower efficiency.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Only way to really get accurate mileage is to reset the trip odometer to 0 after topping off your tank, then drive til near empty and jot down how many gallons it takes to top off again and divide that number by how many miles you just went, or maybe it's the other way around

Don't rely on the trip computer for the gas mileage. It's at least 7-10% optimistic. Winter driving will be harder on a vehicle. You'll be using a winter blend as well as idling longer to warm the truck up. When you changed the plugs, did you gap them correctly? What is your tire size? The stock tire size is 265/65/17. If someone changed them to a different size, that'll also explain a difference in mileage.

The new plugs that I've put in were pre gaped, thats what it said on the box, and on the computer at advance auto parts store where I purchased them....I hope they were gaped properly paid $6.99per plug, didn't even think about comparing the gaps to the ones I already had on the truck.

I guess I should take one out and compare it to a oem iridium plug.

Far as tires I believe they are the 17' tires - P265/65R/17 Michellen max 35psi

How much are primary 02 sensors anyone have any ideas on it...with my luck probably min. $200 a piece and can I install them myself?? Has anyone had the chance to replace them.

Yes I clean the MAF at each 30 k mile interval and cleaning the pvc was good thinking. If in fact you are getting really bad mileage, then I would have the dealer hook the OBDII up on their scanner for a proper check.
