10w30 synthetic in my v8

Dumb question.. It says use 5w30 oil.. is it going to hurt if I use 10w30 synthetic for my v8? The guys at Oreilys autoparts said doesn't matter at all and it was a great deal there.. The lady at toyota dealership didn't sound to convincing and said don't use it..

If you are in San Diego, where the climate is moderate and you don't want to go to the trouble of returning the oil and buying the correct type, it should be fine. Just make sure that the next time you change the oil you go back to 5-30 as Toyota intended. If you lived in a cold climate I would tell you to go back and get the correct oil now, but where you are (I'm in so cal also) you should be fine. Change back to 5-30 on your next oil change.

The 10w-30 shouldn't hurt it for an interval, but the 5w-30 is what the vehicle was meant to use.

Yeah that is a dumb question given the additional cost of the correct oil weighted against possiable unnecessary wear to an engine the cost of which might well exceed the market value of the vehicle. LOL

You will be perfectly fine. Just do not use something like 20w-50.

New engines today require 0w-20. This is more of a government mandate GHG emission regulations.

I have a CRV with 60k miles and it says to put 0w-20 and I usually put 5w20 since I do not live in the Arctic.

I have a buddy with a 14' Subaru Forester that requires 0w-20 oil and gets the low oil warning light on at 4k miles due to burning excess oil (class action law suit going on now against subaru). I decided to experiment and put 5w-20 and than 5w30. Using 5w-30 oil in his Subaru the burning of oil almost gone. Burns some but not as extreme as using the 0w.

Why are you using 10w-30 when the manual clearly states at any temperature to use 5w-30?

To the OP Toyota Engineers put 5w-30 for a reason, follow what they suggest and your vehicle should be fine.

I haven't had a single issue with mine so far. Burns less oil now that I'm using 10w-30 so I'm gonna stick with it. College student so I need all the money I can save right now

You've got issues if your V8 is burning ANY oil.

How much are you actually saving? They are always the same price in Walmart, Autozone, advanceautoparts and even Bj's.

With air temps above 40 deg f you will not see any difference in any operation of the engine using a 10-30wt synthetic oil. however when the air temps drops 20deg f and lower the lower it gets the more you will see the difference. puts more stress on the starter also oil flow is reduced and you can get high pressure that may cause the oil filter to bypass. this is when the engine is on a 20 deg f and lower temp cold start..

in a place like southern CA/ Florida should not be any issues .

most important is keep it at the full mark and change oil when hot allow time 30 MIN to drain all the goop out .

Temperature rarely drops below 50 deg f around here. At least by the time I do any driving its much above that

Less quarts? How many quarts are you putting into the engine between oil changes? You might have a serious issue with your engine.

Between oil changes I probably use about a quart or so of the 10w-30 to top off (not all at once obviously). Before when I was using 5w-30 I'd go through roughly 3 quarts between oil changes (again, not all at once. Over time).
