13' 4Runner Stalling Issue

I have a 2013 SR5 4x4 with 180k miles.

This morning, I went to start it, and it turned over and then quickly dropped rpm and shut off, it did this multiple times. I hooked up a code scanner and even after several attempts to start no codes were pending or stored.

I measured 12.6 V at the battery, then disconnected it and cleaned the terminals. Same issue. I then hooked up jumper cables and connected it to my wife's 13' Highlander and it exhibited the same symptoms.

I next checked the air filter and it looked fine and had no debris in the box.

I checked the scanner again, and still no codes, though it now showed none of the emissions readiness passed (I'm guessing this is due to the stalling.)

I was told to check the MAF and TB, and clean as necessary.... but I'm stumped that I'm not getting any codes.

check for chewed wiring? was everything working fine yesterday or last time you drove it?

I had a similar experience, everything fine one morning, then one night the vehicle was struggling not to stall, then christmas tree on the dash. turns out ignition wiring was chewed by rodents. when it happened to me the codes were not immediate, perhaps your vehicle isn't staying on long enough?

Had this happen on our 2014. It was the throttle body and a good cleaning cured it. Also cleaned the MAF, but that was not the problem.

UPDATE:

It’s fixed, cleaned the TB again with carb cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Then found a very obscure pedal relearn procedure that was the missing piece. Prior to the relearn it would idle but wouldn’t rev beyond 2k rpm and did it slowly. Now it’s back to normal.

Please post the "obscure pedal relearn procedure" so it will help others in the future that might experience the same problem!!

Well after driving it to pick up pizza and having run normal, I parked at home for a couple hours. Went to run to the store just now and same no start condition. Probably going to try and track down a new Throttle Body tomorrow… I was getting the throttle position codes again.

Run a bottle or two of Techron through it before buying a replacement throttle body. Also be sue to clean around both sides of the butterfly valve.

If this does not work I would look at the fuel pump unless you have already changed it with those miles. Fuel pump issues are very similar to this.

Replaced it with a remanufactured unit today and got it running. Took it for a drive and about 7 minutes in I lost power slowly until the engine shit off while driving. Coasted to a side road and had it towed to a mechanic… wouldn’t even try to start once parked.

Not sure if it’s the gas pedal and its sensors, or a relay or wiring issue… can’t really find any diagrams related to the TPS system. Hopefully the mechanic can figure it out and it doesn’t crush me financially.

Honestly that’s what I’m leaning towards… it’s worked intermittently and finally gave out. It also used to start briefly sputter and die, and yesterday it wouldn’t even turn over.

I’m tempted to try and replace it in the repair shop parking lot myself today lol.

Update for those who deal with this in the future. It does appear to be a bad fuel pump. Tried starting it the mechanic and it would not start. Popped the breather tube off and hit it with a little starter fluid and it fired right up then died.

They should get it installed tomorrow and hopefully I’ll be back on the road. If I had been able to get the part myself Sunday I would have attempted the install in my driveway, but I’m tired and just want to be able to use it again.

Final post on this one, the shop ended up replacing the fuel pump and filter, flushing the lines and cleaned out the tank.

Picked it up this evening and it fired right up and made the trip home. So for anyone who may have similar symptoms with the codes I had… I would recommend verifying it won’t start, and then unplugging the breather and spraying some start fluid in… if it fires it’s likely a bad fuel pump.

What codes did you have? You never posted any codes and in fact stated that you never saw any codes in your scanner.

Sorry, it eventually triggered codes P0171 and P0174, both banks lean. Mechanic changed the fuel pump, and the new one was faulty so it was changed again.

Drove fine yesterday but last night I had extended crank 6 seconds and then P0171 triggered again. Other than the hard start and poor fuel economy it drives smooth. LTFT for both banks 39.8% and doesn’t change with throttle. Front O2’s are 3.2 volts, rear O2 sensors displayed .012… since both are the same I’m leaning towards MAF sensor. I did spray some carb cleaner last night around the intake and vacuum lines last night with no change to idle.
