14.6 MPG - 2014 SR5 - After lift and tires....

With my setup (33-inch tires, lift, roof rack, etc.), I am getting between 15.0-15.4 mpg per tank with 70/30 City/Highway driving which is approx. 2 mpg drop from my pre-lift performance. So if my mix included more City driving, I could see mid- to high 14s as well. Sounds normal to me as well.

Thanks Paul.

Normal. TBH, most of us don't expect much MPG when we mod the snot out of these things. I get about the same milage you have with all my armor and regear and 34s. Biggest hit was lifting for sure. Changed everything. Also, there are times when I am driving city mostly and I can drop all the way down to 12 MPG. It is the price of admission. You have a beast of a trail rig. There are reasons Toyota didn't sell them with the 33s and lifted... CARB...

Thanks so much Ben I appreciate your feedback on this.

BTW: Skids are on Pow now and will go up this weekend :-)

^This. It does matter. I had MB wheels for a while and then swapped to the Konig and did get a little back. Stealth should be similar as they are only a LB or two heavier than Konig.

How much do the Type X weight? I couldn't find that info on their website..

That's not much, actually less than stock, i think stock is 27? At least it was on my 20's.

Sorry I guess that wont do much for you, unless you go with smaller/less aggressive tire.. where's the fun at that point.

HAHA exactly, had I known this I would've gone with the Trail Grapplers or something more aggressive....... live and learn.

:deadhorse:

It seems to me that if you have a ton of money for all these parts and accessories then using a little more gas should not bother you at all.

The Kool Kids Klub does have it's dues....

I think once you're engine loosens up a bit as you increase your mileage...it'll improve slightly..

notice my avg is right at 16 over 35 fill ups at stock. low is 12 (winter 28-dec-13) and high was 19 just recently (15-may-14).

only mods I have done are interior led lights, and weather tech liners. rest are either factory installed or port installed items.

I drive 15 miles 1-way to work M-F @ 74 mph. I don't expect much as others can attest who lived in ND, there isn't a day that goes by when you DONT have 10-15+mph crosswinds daily.

Just curious, what are you guys using to get your MPG? The built in dash computer? An OBDII scan gauge? Or are you guys just manually calculating it based on how many miles you drove down to let's say like a quarter tank left?

On my built in dash calculations i'm getting like 19.3 MPG. That's a 11 mile per day commute (each way) with like 3 miles of it on streets and the other 8 on highways. I have twice per week trips that are are almost all freeway that are about 50 miles each (100 miles total).

I don't mind the day-to-day mileage but the highway fuel consumption is crap and I experience only a marginal improvement unless very flat and non-windy. The only reason I can think of is that I added Husky Mud Guards in the fall and they are creating extra drag.

My dash says 18.2 generally.

I have an ODBII scan program with instant/trip and total mileage. BUT I have finely tuned that to actual mileage, not the other way around...

The only way to know for sure is to calculate it from the pump, assuming your speedometer is reasonably correct, using factory size tires etc. and even then no one measurement will be "accurate" you need to average over time. Relying on the fill-up auto stop is pretty rough, but over several tanks it averages out.

I used that number to calibrate my scan gauge software and now it's just slightly high. The dash gauge is way off, though on mine is always about 3/4 MPG too low, others seem to be 1 to 2 mpg high :/

For me at least, manual calculation with correction for tire size, I end up within a few tenths of a MPG of what the dash says.

So you're changing your tire diameter by 3.5% by moving to bigger tires. So you should calculate mpg accordingly. Miles via trip computer per tank multiplied by 1.035. Then divide that my gallons consumed according to the gas pump.

That will be your most accurate mpg.

Bigger tires also me more weight, therefore more power required by the engine to get the thing going. More power = more fuel = less gas mileage.

This. On a 285/70-17, you are actually getting 15.1mpg instead of the indicated 14.6mpg. With your mods and if you see any stop and go driving (where these big heavy wheels and tires will drink the fuel getting up to speed), it isn't shocking to see you around 15mpg.

Buyer beware with wheels and tires. I hated the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors that I put on my 4Runner about 6 months before I sold it. So much heavier than the stock tires even in the same size and you really felt the difference. Plus, the tire shop never got them balanced right so I was getting vibration through the steering wheel at certain speeds. As much crap as the stock Bridgestones get, they never left me stuck in the snow or off road and I could pull 21mpg all day long on them. Shame they didn't just look a little better. Just FYI, if you go to Tirerack, you can usually get some good information on the actual measurements of a given tire. It will have weight, rolling diameter, tread width, tire width as measured on a certain width wheel, etc. I will never again just go on what is the highest rated tire... which was the case with my Goodyears.

Stock, was around 18.5. After 3 inch lift, sliders, and Nitto Trail MTs, which are way heavy, now get 16, nearly every tank. Totally worth it....
