14.6 MPG - 2014 SR5 - After lift and tires....

1engineer may not always come across as polite or political but I don't think any harm or insult is meant. (check the end of his post). I appreciate when people point out things that are incorrect.........there are people that believe a throttle body spacer and a votaries inducing fan in the intake will give you 15% more HP and 10% better fuel economy, all the for the low price of $69.99 (not referring to anyone in this thread that would believe that!).

To the OP you don't seem to concerned, and I wouldn't be. You tracked your milage before modification and now know what it is after. I doubt anything is wrong with the truck and there are certainly no "quick wins" for a MPG increase otherwise Toyota would have done so. Like you mentioned we didn't buy these trucks for MPG.

For Reference (actual contribution to this thread): My 2014 Trail Premium with a 3/2 Radflow lift and 285/70 BFG KM2's is getting 16.4 (hand calculated/corrected for larger tire dis.) with a ~70/30 city driving. Again there is no scientific method to that number other than for My Truck, My habits etc is what I get.....useful really only to me to compare/track for future interest.

You know, you're kind of an a$$hole. Ive read a lot of your posts and the majority are just like this one, its pretty damn obnoxious. Just because you are an engineer you assume you are smarter than everyone else and know everything about everything. Being an electrical engineer myself i have met a lot of people like you and to a man i cant stand a single one. You may be correct and may be smarter than the rest but keep it to your ****ing self and keep the posts strictly helpful

im new on here im just saying what worked for me, I didn't give my insight to get ripped on, I never did a full year of driving to test my mileage. I have two sets of tires and since owning my 4runner Ive figured out that I have two different driving styles summertime and wintertime. during the summer I find I coast more down hills and accelerate a lot easier. in the winter I definitely step on it more.

i tried giving some help without recommending him to cut his exhaust up.

it really matters on your driving style, tires and weight. performance parts will only help so much.

having your computer tuned helps as well, email urd and they can help pre program a maf calibrator to your exact parts.

like i said before im new on here give me a break! i joined this to get information and see other runners. i saw 14.6 in a thread and thought wow that is really low. i know people on here will try anything to get an extra mile or two per gallon.

***EDIT damn I thought you were taking to me, I don't know why that guy had to go on and list what I said sarcastically like what I was saying is wrong. I was giving my insight on what ive done to my runner and what I think will help and if you don't like what I have to say in my posts.

check your average yourself.. after putting bigger tires.. the computers calculations won't be accurate

Guess I should start manually checking my MPGs, I didn't know that the dash computer wouldn't be accurate after the bigger tires went on. Maybe I shouldn't be so proud of it still being at 18.2

With bigger tires you would actually be getting better millage than what is being read on the screen since you are physically traveling further.

Just put on a 3" lift and didn't drop at all on my MPGs. My biggest drop was 2mpg on 265 Duratracs Load C and 1mpg on the Gobi Rack. Currently sitting about 19mpg.

Thank you all.

Here's my take on all this at this time:

a) Not loosing any sleep over it as I didn't buy this for the MPG's but more than likely curios (Thanks 1Eng)

b) At this point I am convinced that my biggest drop was due to my Nitto Terra Grapplers at 33"

c) My (newly acquired) ScanGauge II tells me that in reality is more like 14.4 city and 17/18 hwy in average which is not that bad considering.

Again, happy trails.....

it all comes down to driving style, roll up to red lights and stop signs, don't floor it when the light is green unless you are racing the guy next to you. also roll down hills as much as you can.
I guess the CAI is a myth, but having a bigger throttle body, an aftermarket exhaust will help along with free flowing LT headers, you have to have your computer tuned though to see any significant changes in performance and mileage.
I also keep my runner as empty as possible.
I don't know if this helps mileage but every day this summer when I drive I keep my front two windows down the roof open and the rear window down in the trunk (not sure if this helps or makes it worse)

I don't have a 4R TEP [yet], but some thoughts I have are:
Go to WalMart or some auto store and buy a bottle of Techron PRO-GARD fuel injector cleaner.

tomasallan It is AUG 2014 and you are driving a 2014 TE. I highly doubt the fuel injectors need cleaning. I'd stay away from that stuff with such a new truck.

your truck looks awesome. makes me want one too.

Thanks dude!

This all kinda sucks to read! I've had a lot of Toyota's and one of the reasons I haven't held onto any of the 3 2005+ tacomas I've had is that they got full-size fuel economy in a mid-size truck with 2/3 the power.

I'm currently driving a lifted 2001 4runner with HEAVY 285/75/16 load range D bfg all-terrains and 266,000 miles and getting almost 17mpg (hand calculated) in mixed driving (mostly back roads).

I ALMOST pulled the trigger on a 4th gen V8 earlier this year with a small lift but it was getting about the same MPG y'all are seeing.

It's crazy to me to think that Toyota is going backwards on fuel economy on these things.

I know it's the not the same but my 2008 got way better MPGs than my 2014 and my 1995. I was getting 24mpgs but I only had a set of all terrains on there (p rated) no lift. It still started off a lot higher than the other vehicles.

Mine is pretty much a prius. I'm getting about 15 mpg right now and feeling very happy. Lol. ymmv.

Everybody drives differently, lives in different environments and elevations. The way I look at it is that 19 MPG or 15 MPG isn't that big a deal. on a truck with a 20 gal tank (I know ours is bigger), you would expect 19 MPG to be 380 miles. 15 MPG is 300 miles. if we assumed $3.65/gal, or $73/tank, you are looking at 19.2 cents versus 24.3 cents per mile. If you drive 12k miles a year the 4 MPG cost you $612/year ($2,304 at 19 MPG versus $2,916 at 15 MPG). We all spend a few $$$$ modding the snot out of our rigs and then piss around about $612. For me at least, I really don't care*. Another way to put it, every 1 MPG is about $150/year or $0.41 per day. Most of us spend more than that on beer/coffee/soda... you get the point.

*full disclosure: I do get to write off many of my miles so my impact is even more minimal than most...
