144,000 miles..which oil? weight?

I bought a 1997 v6 4runner last week with 144xxx miles. What oil and weight should i use? The only thing i am going to do with it, is daily driving. I want ultimate protection w/o spending alot of money.

Castrol GTX 5w30 and change oil and filter every 5K miles. Use a OEM filter.

Unless you live somewhere where it's cold, use a heavier oil, like 10w30. Also, the fleet oils like Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac 1300, and Chevron Delo are high quality at a reasonable price in the gallon size. I used 10w40/10w30 in my 86 4runner for the first 120K mi, then switched to 5w40 synthetic (delvac 1 & rotella T syn) when I moved from CA to AZ. Nowdays, I run the rotella T synthetic at 5K mi intervals.

Stay away from the synthetics, it can do more harm than good in older engines. Use a "high mileage" oil, they have a seal conditioner among other good additives for protecting your engine.

I have heard newer engines 90's and up don't do well with 10 W 40. In my older cars 140,000 miles and up I have switched from 5 W 30 to 10 W 30. I get a little less oil burn off and I feel you get a better protection. I live in GA., so it doesn't too cold. If you live up north I would use 5 W 30 in the winter and switch to 10 W 30 in the summer.

You should never listen to advice from the counter monkeys at AZ or most other parts stores. Most of thier facts are based on rumors or even worse ... opinion.


FYI , 10W30 Offers LESS start up protection than 5W30. They are the same viscosity at operating temperatures.


2 things I would recommend with a higer mileage engine.

1. Use a quality "dino" oil such as Castrol GTX, Havoline, Shell, Motorcraft etc just to name a few. Your oil change interval should be based on your driving habits, ie are you pedal to the metal alot? Also based off the miles you drive (highway/city miles). For normal driving I recommend 4-5k oil change intervals on good dinos.

2. Use a product called AutoRX

I have actually thought of using it. Has anyone ever used it? I know they contribute money to that oil board, so I take some of the stuff said with a grain of salt.

My fear is I may cause more trouble than what I fix.

Auto-RX is the real deal. Go to their web site. This stuff works, I've used it and I am using it right now on two vehicles with good results. It does everything it claims to do. Every two years when you flush the cooling system, transmission and breaks you should do a cycle of Auto-RX.
